The present edition of the book is revised as per the UGC syllabus.Questions and problems at the end of each chapter have been up-dated.Many new solved examples are included in this edition.Certain topic have been added so that students from some universities where the syllabus has been modified and upgraded may benefit.Besides being a text book we hope that this benifit students appearing at the IAS,AMIE and other Competitive Examinations.
This textbook has been designed to provide necessary foundation in optics which would not only acquaint the student with the subject but would also prepare for an intensive study of advanced topics in optics at a later stage. With an emphasis on concepts, mathematical derivations have been kept at the minimum. This textbook has been primarily written for undergraduate students of B.Sc. Physics and would also be a useful resource for aspirants appearing for competitive examinations.
This textbook familiarizes the students with the general laws of thermodynamics, kinetic theory & statistical physics, and their applications to physics. Conceptually strong, it is flourished with numerous figures and examples to facilitate understanding of concepts. Written primarily for B.Sc. Physics students, this textbook would also be a useful reference for students of engineering.
The subject matter is divided into twelve chapters. Each chapter is self-contained and is treated in a comprehensive way, using the S.I. system of units. Harmonic Oscillators, Linearity and Superposition Principle, Oscillations with One Degree of Freedom, Resonance and Sharpness of Resonance, Quality Factor, Doppler Effect in Sound and Light, Medical Applications of Ultrasonics, Acoustic Intensity, Acoustic Measurements, Wave Velocity and Group Velocity, Maxwells Equations, Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves in Isotropic Media, De Broglie Waves, Heisenbergs Uncertainty Principle and Special Theory of Relatively are some of the important topics which have been given special attention. Solved numerical problems, wherever necessary, are given in the text and in the exercises at the end of each chapter. The book is intended to be a textbook for the undergraduate students of Indian universities.
This book sets out to elaborate on the principles of sound in a most scholarly and comprehensive manner. Harmonic oscillators, linearity and superposition principle, oscillations with one degree of freedom, resonance and sharpness of resonance, quality factor, Doppler effect in sound and light, tape recording, cathode-ray oscillograph, medical applications of ultrasonics, acoustic intensity and acoustic measurements are some of the important topics which have been given special attention. Although the book is for BSc students, some of the elementary discussions are included to initiate an advanced treatment of the subject.
A collection of solicited and refereed articles from distinguished researchers across the field of stochastic analysis and its application to finance. It covers the topics ranging from Markov processes, backward stochastic differential equations, stochastic partial differential equations, and stochastic control, to risk measure and risk theory.
When Portuguese explorers first arrived in India, the maritime passage initiated an exchange of goods as well as ideas. European ambassadors, missionaries, soldiers, and scholars who followed produced a body of knowledge that shaped European thought about India. Sanjay Subrahmanyam tracks these changing ideas over the entire early modern period.
Offering the first long-duration analysis of the relationship between the state and religion in South Asia, this book looks at the nature and origins of Indian secularism. It interrogates the proposition that communalism in India is wholly a product of colonial policy and modernisation, questions whether the Indian state has generally been a benign, or disruptive, influence on public religious life, and evaluates the claim that the region has spawned a culture of practical toleration. The book is structured around six key arenas of interaction between state and religion: cow worship and sacrifice, control of temples and shrines, religious festivals and processions, proselytising and conversion, communal riots, and religious teaching/doctrine and family law. It offers a challenging argument about the role of the state in religious life in a historical continuum, and identifies points of similarity and contrast between periods and regimes. The book makes a significant contribution to the literature on South Asian History and Religion.
Taking a broad, comparative approach to imperial experiences, this volume provides an authoritative survey of the latest research into the histories of modern empires. The focus is on the era of modern imperial history dating approximately from the early sixteenth century to the present. Such a periodization enables the volume to include the European experience of imperial expansion and settlement, important historical experiences outside the west such as those of Russia, Japan and China, the collapse of European empires attendant on decolonization in the post World War II period, and the contemporary example of North America. The companion is divided into three sections, 'Times', 'Spaces' and 'Themes' which allows chronological, geographical and thematical approaches to be successfully combined. In so doing this volume provides a unique research tool that will be invaluable to all students and scholars interested in the history of empires, imperialism and colonialism in the post-classical world.
