The search for meaning in later life: An empirical exploration of religion and death draws on thorough qualitative and quantitative research among older Dutch adults. The scarcity of vital narratives of ageing and the fragmentation of religious `grand narratives' appear to complicate their search for meaning. Moreover, increased longevity and the medicalisation of death challenge many older adults to decide about the right timing of death. This study qualitatively and quantitatively explores narratives of ageing and of religion expressed by older Dutch adults and their attitudes toward death, euthanasia and life prolongation.

Auch wenn wir das Sterben anderer erleben, einen Leichnam wahrnehmen oder Todesangst empfinden, zeigt sich das Ganz Andere des Todes. Als undenkbare Paradoxie: Der Tod ist ein absolut intimes, einzigartiges Geschehen, aber keine unserer Möglichkeiten. Der Leichnam ist Mensch und Ding zugleich. Und das Nichts, das unserem Ableben folgt, gibt es nicht. Bedenken lässt sich aber, dass der Tod das Ende ist, dass er jede Art von Umkehr oder Wiederholung unmöglich macht und dass wir nie zuvor existiert haben, wenn wir tot sind.

From Stone Age ideas about dying as otherworld journey to the contemporary Cosmopolitan Age of dying in nursing homes, Allan Kellehear takes the reader on a 2 million year journey of discovery that covers the major challenges we will all eventually face: anticipating, preparing, taming and timing for our eventual deaths. This book, first published in 2007, is a major review of the human and clinical sciences literature about human dying conduct. The historical approach of this book places our recent images of cancer dying and medical care in broader historical, epidemiological and global context. Professor Kellehear argues that we are witnessing a rise in shameful forms of dying. It is not cancer, heart disease or medical science that presents modern dying conduct with its greatest moral tests, but rather poverty, ageing and social exclusion.

Here in one volume are two of Birger Gerhardsson's much-debated works on the transmission of tradition in Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity. In Memory and Manuscript (1961), Gerhardsson explores the way in which Jewish rabbis during the first Christian centuries preserved and passed on their sacred tradition, and he shows how early Christianity is better understood in light of how that tradition developed in Rabbinic Judaism. In Tradition and Transmission in Early Christianity (1964), Gerhardsson further clarifies the discussion and answers criticism of his earlier book. This Biblical Resource Series combined edition corrects and expands Gerhardsson's original works and includes a new preface by the author and a lengthy new foreword by Jacob Neusner that summarizes the works' importance and subsequent influence.
