Questo libro rappresenta il risultato della rielaborazione della tesi di laurea specialistica Bernardo Celentano: pittore storico tra accademia e innovazione, discussa dall’autrice presso l’Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza nell’a.a. 2005/2006. Attraverso un’attenta analisi delle fonti coeve, si ripercorrono le principali tappe della breve ma intensa vicenda umana e artistica di Bernardo Celentano allo scopo di ricomporre il catalogo delle opere di uno dei protagonisti della pittura italiana dell’Ottocento. Napoletano d’origine, a lui si deve il merito di aver introdotto in ambito romano le nuove poetiche del verismo storico, contribuendo al rinnovamento della pittura di storia alla luce delle novità diffuse da Domenico Morelli di cui il Celentano fu uno dei più validi seguaci.
