Lives in Transit
Lives in Transit chronicles the dangerous journeys of Central American migrants in transit through Mexico. Drawing on fieldwork in humanitarian aid shelters and other key sites, Wendy A. Vogt examines the multiple forms of violence that migrants experience as their bodies, labor, and lives become implicated in global and local economies that profit from their mobility as racialized and gendered others. She also reveals new forms of intimacy, solidarity, and activism that have emerged along transit routes over the past decade. Through the stories of migrants, shelter workers, and local residents, Vogt encourages us to reimagine transit as a site of both violence and precarity as well as social struggle and resistance.

Este volumen está destinado al colectivo de profesionales involucrados en la formación docente en una América Latina que, cada vez más, reconoce y acepta positivamente su diversidad cultural y lingüística. Nuevos maestros para América Latina busca contribuir a esta discusión y análisis reuniendo trabajos con un balance y perspectivas de la formación docente en un grupo de países latinoamericanos en los que están en curso reformas educativas. Extrae y presenta lecciones aprendidas que orientan tanto la formulación de políticas educativas como la puesta en marcha de programas y proyectos específicos. Desde este espacio deseamos estimular innovaciones educativas que no sólo den cuenta de la diversidad, sino que partan de ella y contribuyan a la búsqueda de la unidad en la diversidad. Las nuevas demandas de nuestras sociedades obligan a reconstruir tanto las prácticas educativas como el sentido de la formación del profesorado. Ambas tareas son imprescindibles si realmente se pretende formar una ciudadanía intercultural más crítica y más democrática.
Beyond Mestizaje
Racism has historically been a taboo topic in Mexico. This is largely due to the nationalist project of mestizaje which contends that because all Mexicans are racially mixed, race is not a salient political issue. In recent years, however, race and racism have become important topics of debate in the country’s public sphere and academia. This book introduces readers to a sample of these diverse and sometimes conflicting views that also intersect with discussions of class. The activists and scholars included in the volume come from fields such as anthropology, linguistics, history, sociology, and political science. Through these diverse epistemological frameworks, the authors show how people in contemporary Mexico interpret the world in racial terms and denounce racism.
