Taiwan’s rapid industrialization during the 1960s and 1970s, combined with the democratic revolution that began with the lifting of martial law in 1987 were of deep historic importance. Over the next decade Taiwan’s "political miracle" matched its earlier "economic miracle" creating a vibrant liberal democracy complete with freedom of speech, association and assembly, rule of law, and competitive and fair multi-party elections. The continuation of these achievements and the new challenges that have surfaced are addressed in rich detail in the chapters of this volume by an international team of experts. One of the biggest such challenges is Mainland China’s economic success, which has a...

Markets with Bureaucratic Characteristics

China’s breathtaking economic development has been driven by bureaucrats. Even as the country transitioned away from socialist planning toward a market economy, the economic bureaucracy retained a striking degree of influence and control over crafting and implementing policy. Yet bureaucrats are often dismissed as faceless and inconsequential, their role neglected in favor of party leaders’ top-down rule or bottom-up initiatives. Markets with Bureaucratic Characteristics offers a new account of economic policy making in China over the past four decades that reveals how bureaucrats have spurred large-scale transformations from within. Yingyao Wang demonstrates how competition among bureau...

Mechanical Thrombectomy and Development of Thrombectomy Devices

Today, mechanical thrombectomy plays an essential role in treating stroke related to major vessel occlusion. The device technology has been evolving in the past decade from the first-generation device of clot retriever (Merci Clot Retrieval System) to stent retrievers and aspiration catheters. With the quality of aspiration catheters improving every year, the treatment strategy has been changing dramatically. Therefore, to improve the efficacy and safety of the new generation devices, preclinical evaluation of the prototype devices using experimental models under the imaging guidance becomes crucial. Various experimental models have been proposed by investigators for the simulation of mechanical thrombectomy. For instance, patient-specific silicon models based on the 3D reconstruction of vessel segments, clinically-representative artificial clot models with various compositional and mechanical features, e.g. (fibrin rich clot, erythrocyte rich clot or mixture of each), and animal models using swine, ovine and canine.

This handbook presents a timely, broad-ranging, and provocative overview of the essential nature of ecotourism. The chapters will both advance the existing central themes of ecotourism and provide challenging and divergent observations that will thrust ecotourism into new areas of research, policy, and practice. The volume is arranged around four key themes: sustainability, ethics and identity, change, conflict, and consumption, and environment and learning, with a total of 28 chapters. The first section focuses on sustainability as a core ecotourism criterion, with a primary focus on some of the macro sustainability issues that have an impact on ecotourism. Foremost among these topics is th...
