Global Product Development
This book of proceedings is the synthesis of all the papers, including keynotes presented during the 20th CIRP Design conference. The Serotonin Receptors
A comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of our current understanding of the molecular and structural biology of 5-HT receptors and their potential use for drug discovery. The authors describe the anatomical, cellular, and subcellular distribution of 5-HT receptors and demonstrate a powerful approach to elucidating their physiological role using knockout mice in which the 5-HT receptors were deleted. They also review our understanding of the physiological role(s) of 5-HT receptors based mainly on studies performed in genetically engineered mice. Highlights include discussions of the behavioral phenotypes of 5-HT receptor knockout animals, the molecular biology and pharmacology of 5-HT receptors, and insights into the complexity of 5-HT receptor signal transduction.
Molecular Aspects of G Protein-coupled Receptors
In the recent years, studies based on two-hybrid screens, proteomic, biochemical and cell biology approaches, have shown that intracellular domains of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) or heptaspanning membrane receptors (HSMRs) interact with intracellular proteins. These interactions are the basis of a protein network associated to these receptors which includes scaffolding proteins containing one or several PDZ (post-synaptic density-95, discs large, zona occludens-1) domains, signalling proteins and proteins of the cytoskeleton. The present book is focused on the emerging evidence for interactions of G protein-coupled receptors with scaffolding, cytoskeletal and signalling proteins that will play a role in the targeting, anchoring and functioning of these receptors in the plasma membrane, thus contributing to cell development and plasticity.
Dynamic Damage and Fragmentation
Engineering structures may be subjected to extreme high-rate loading conditions, like those associated with natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis, rock falls, etc.) or those of anthropic origin (impacts, fluid–structure interactions, shock wave transmissions, etc.). Characterization and modeling of the mechanical behavior of materials under these environments is important in predicting the response of structures and improving designs.
