As head of Pierce-Arrow in its formative years, Colonel Charles Clifton played a significant role in the development of a venerated automobile manufacturer. Roundly respected in his time, Clifton was a force in automobile trade associations for nearly a quarter century but slipped into undeserved obscurity after his death in 1928. This biography covers Charles Clifton's role in the earliest conflicts and achievements of the American automobile industry and the growth of the Pierce-Arrow company, using industry publications and periodicals of the time as well as recollections of his associates and contemporaries. It details his wider importance in shaping the industry itself, especially his role in the controversies surrounding the Selden patent and the patent cross-licensing agreement between auto manufacturers. The impact of World War I on the industry and Clifton's activities responding to the vast operational changes the war brought about conclude the book.

This memoir highlights a compelling story of tragedy and triumph during the Jim Crow and separate but equal era in the Deep South. The book traces the evolution of Joseph Pierce Braud, from his humble birthplace in A-Bend in Ascension Parish to his graduation from Howard University Medical School in 1958 and thereafter. Braud overcame the death of his father and helped support the family by scrapping rice and potatoes and shining shoes on Carrollton Street in New Orleans. During the 1930s and 1940s, his family received only $18 per month for seven siblings. Before earning his medical degree from Howard University Medical School in 1958, Braud helped his siblings obtain a college education. Subsequently, he opened his medical practice in New Orleans and held a staff position at Flint-Goodridge Hospital of Dillard University. From Brookstown with its 300 residents, Dr. Braud paved the way for six members of his Braud Family Group to become Medical Doctors, including (14) BS degrees, (4) Masters Degrees, (1) Juris Doctorate, (1) Doctor of Philosophy, and (1) nurse. Find out how Braud beat the odds to earn his education and pave the way for other Blacks to enter the medical field.

Reading Tamora Pierce: 'The Protector of the Small'

Tamora Pierce is a prolific and very unusual modern master of fantasy for young adults and the first such author to appear regularly on the New York Times bestseller lists. The four books making up The Protector of the Small are the 9th to 12th (of 15) novels set in Tortall, and follow the progress of Keladry of Mindelan from the first openly female page in more than a century to her attainment of Knighthood and introduction to war. The Notes cover Tamora Pierce's life and work; the world of Tortall (including the geography, cast, and neighbouring cultures); the strange menagerie of immortal creatures who may be friend or foe; the pantheon of interfering multicultural god/desse/s; knighthood...
