Megacity Yangon
Megacities are new urban phenomena, results of globalisation and subject to as well as motors of global ecological, socio-economic, and political change. New are the dimensions of growth, concentrations of population, infrastructure, economic power and decisions - and the simultaneous, self-energising acceleration processes of development. Mega-Urban Development and Transformation Processes in Vietnam
Since the beginning of the Doi Moi reforms, Vietnam's economy and society have been profoundly transformed. While in 1986 less than 13 million of Vietnam's inhabitants lived in areas classified as urban (20%), the number has risen to more than 30 million inhabitants today (35% of the total population). This massive urbanisation was made possible by the rapid transformation of the former agricultural state into an industrial and service state and extensive migration processes from rural areas to the fast growing cities and megacities. Transformative Pedagogic Practice
This book explores how the transnational Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) policy is being translated into formal school education in India. Stephanie Leder investigates the ESD’s transformative potential for pedagogic practice and builds a set of principles for how the global objectives of the ESD can be interpreted in diverse socio-cultural contexts. Her approach for transformative pedagogic practice emphasizes the promotion of a critical consciousness through argumentation skills. Using the case of water conflicts in geography education in India, the book reveals the contradictions between ESD objectives and curricula, syllabi, textbooks and classroom teaching at secondary schools in Pune, Maharashtra. Leder’s approach demonstrates how principles of schooling can be altered towards learner-centered, problem-posing and network-thinking teaching approaches to empower students towards reflective decision-making on the sustainable use of natural resources.
Dancing Youth
Breaking, popping, locking, waacking, and hip-hop dance are practiced widely in contemporary Vietnam. Considering the dance practices in the larger context of post-socialist transformation, urban restructuring, and changing gender relations, Sandra Kurfürst examines youth's aspirations and desires embodied in dance. Drawing on a rich and diverse range of qualitative data, including interviews, sensory and digital ethnography, she shows how dancers confront social and gender norms while following their passion. As a contribution to area and global studies, the book illuminates the translocal spatialities of hip hop, produced through the circulation of objects and the movement of people.

Perspectives on History and Change in the Karakorum, Hindukush, and Himalaya
The contributions to this proceedings volume emerged from an interdisciplinary workshop, held in April 1995, which brought together members of two high-mountain research projects supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Society). Regionally, the focus was on northern Pakistan, India and Nepal. The main topic common to all participants was the dynamic aspect of the relationships between highlands and lowlands in the past and the present, and their impact in the high mountain regions on trade, population structure, ethnic and religious identity-forming processes as well as the use of the environment. In addition, this volume discusses the aspects and implementations of policies aimed at sustainable development in the Himalayan regions of Pakistan, India and Nepal.
