The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Behavioural Adaptation to Intertidal Life" held in Castiglioncello, Italy (May, 1987) was attended by 50 participants, most of whom presented requested lectures. It was perhaps the first time that specialists of various animal groups, from cnidarians to birds, were able to meet and discuss the importance of behavioural adaptation to this peculiar, sometimes very harsh environment. But the taxonomic barrier is not the only one which the meeting attemped to over come. Lately, the research on intertidal biology has spread from pure taxonomy and static analysis of community structure to such dynamic aspects as intra- and interspecific relationships, and ph...
Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review remains one of the most cited sources in marine science and oceanography. The ever-increasing interest in work in oceanography and marine biology and its relevance to global environmental issues, especially global climate change and its impacts, creates a demand for authoritative refereed reviews summarizing and synthesizing the results of both historical and recent research. This Volume celebrates 60 years of OMBAR, over which time it has been an essential reference for research workers and students in all fields of marine science. The peer-reviewed contributions in Volume 60 are available to read Open Access via this webpage and on OAPEN. I...
Practical Flatfish Culture and Stock Enhancement is a key reference on culture methods, offering both practical applications and essential biological information. Throughout the text, the culture and stock enhancement issues are treated simultaneously, integrating these two perspectives. By looking to the outcomes of hatchery culture methods, including the economics and fish behavior, Practical Flatfish Culture and Stock Enhancement is a valuable tool in making management decisions. With chapters on disease diagnosis and treatment, culture methods for a number of specific species, and the use of flatfish as model organisms in laboratory settings, Practical Flatfish Culture and Stock Enhancement comprehensively covers the subject of culture and stock enhancement. The book is especially useful for aquaculture professionals, industry personnel, researchers, biologists, and aquaculture and fisheries management students.
This landmark publication collates information and studies on the use of estuaries, and specific habitats within them, as nursery, feeding and refuge areas, and migration routes of marine and other fish, many of which are of commercial and conservation importance. The editors and authors of the book have carefully compiled a huge wealth of information from the work of 18 organizations across 11 countries, providing a unique collection of data never before brought together within the covers of one book. Chapters within this exceptional publication cover habitat use by fishes, recruitment and production in estuaries, links between fish and other trophic levels, endangered and rare species, est...
Fascinating and instantly recognizable, flatfishes are unique in their asymmetric postlarval body form. With over 800 extant species recognized and a distribution stretching around the globe, these fishes are of considerable research interest and provide a major contribution to commercial and recreational fisheries worldwide. This second edition of Flatfishes: Biology and Exploitation has been completely revised, updated and enlarged to respond to the ever-growing body of research. It provides: • Overviews of systematics, distribution, life history strategies, reproduction, recruitment, ecology and behaviour • Descriptions of the major fisheries and their management • An assessment of ...
Over the past fifty years, the federal government's efforts to reform American public education have transformed U.S. schools from locally-run enterprises into complex systems jointly constructed by federal, state, and local actors. The construction of this federal schoolhouse-an educational system with common national expectations and practices-has fundamentally altered both education politics and the norms governing educational policy at the local level. Building the Federal Schoolhouse examines these issues through an in-depth, fifty-year examination of federal educational policies in the community of Alexandria, Virginia, a wealthy yet socially diverse suburb of Washington, D.C. The epoc...
Live life in the Alaska and the Yukon more than one hundred years ago through my father's diary, which details the hard work, frustrations and horseplay in the development of Guggenheim's mammoth gold dredge mining operation. Ponder his decision to quit a comfortable job as a mining engineer to venture 60 miles east of Dawson City with the King of the Klondike to endure, without fear, the coldest winter on record averaging minus 50 degrees. Question through his words the unsuccessful digging of a mine shaft through frozen ground ending with the comment, “April Fool's Day. We're down 160 feet in the shaft and no gold. April Fools proper-that is what we are. We are up against the fact we can remain no longer. We have no grub.” Experience his comical adventures as a bear hunter finally giving up to seek employment at the Kennecott Copper Mine; electing to cross the largest ice fields in North America alone, guided by instinct, with only a woman's robe and a tarp for warmth.
Profiles in Canadian Literature is a wide-ranging series of essays on Canadian authors. Each profile acquaints the reader with the writer's work, providing insight into themes, techniques, and special characteristics, as well as a chronology of the author's life. Finally, there is a bibliography of primary works and criticism that suggests avenues for further study. "I know of no better introduction to these writers, and the studies in question are full of basic information not readily obtainable elsewhere." -U of T Quarterly.
