The concept of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) has flourished in recent years and it seems that clinicians, more than ever, crave evidence from the medical literature to inform their clinical care decision making. While it is heartening that great volumes of evidence may exist, it is a daunting task to assimilate, critically review, prioritize, grade, and operationalize this crucial information. This volume of Otolaryngologic Clinics attempts to do just that. This book examines Evidence Based Practices on topics of critical importance to otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons. The evidence has been gathered and is presented by leaders in their respective fields. Topics cover evidence-based p...

In this issue of Otolaryngologic Clinics, guest editors Drs. Joni K. Doherty and Michael Setzen bring their considerable expertise to the topic of Comprehensive Management of Headache for the Otolaryngologist. As many types of headache tend to masquerade as sinus headache, an understanding of the peripheral mechanisms of specific headache types is essential for otolaryngologists to effectively diagnose and treat patients, according to a study published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology. In this issue, top experts in the field address key issues such as novel devices for sinus headache, headache diagnosis in children and adolescents, headache and pregnancy, side-locked and nummular he...

The contributions are accompanied by high-definition online videos that enable the reader to watch endoscopic skull base repairs performed by the masters while providing a step-by-step explanation of the techniques utilized. Otolaryngologist, neurosurgeons as well as physicians interested in learning about or wishing to optimize their techniques in anterior skull base reconstruction will find this publication indispensable reading.
Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) is a heterogeneous disease that impacts a significant portion of the population. Specific subtypes of the disease include cystic fibrosis, allergic fungal sinusitis, and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease. Unfortunately, the majority of patients with CRSwNP do not fall within one of these subtypes, and have variable responses to medical and surgical treatment. There are rapidly evolving theories describing the etiology of CRSwNP that involve alterations in innate immunity, acquired dysfunction of respiratory epithelial cells, and external or environmental factors. This book provides a comprehensive update on the latest theories on the etiology of CRSwNP as well as a review of innovative and effective medical and surgical therapies. Special thanks go to D.W. Kennedy, Philadelphia, Pa., for contributing the foreword. Otorhinolaryngologists and allergologists, as well as other physicians and medical providers treating patients with CRSwNP, will find this volume to be an indispensable source of current information.
