Esta obra analisa como a crise gerada pelo atentado foi representada por essas HQs e quais tipos de "mensagens" se tentou transmitir. A obra traz o contexto político pré-atentado, quando George W. Bush assumiu a presidência dos EUA e trata das crenças dos cidadãos estadunidenses que foram colocadas em dúvida a partir do 11 de setembro, como por exemplo a segurança instransponível da nação. As HQs foram criadas com a intenção de que o Capitão América tivesse alguma relevância neste cenário mais adulto e realista, estabelecendo os ideais pelos quais ele lutaria ou não, sendo o símbolo do "Sonho Americano".
ESTADOS DISTÓPICOS DA AMÉRICA
Este livro tem como objetivo investigar historiograficamente representações do patriotismo estadunidense em histórias em quadrinhos (HQs) que se passam em futuros distópicos. São analisadas três séries de quadrinhos publicadas nos Estados Unidos entre os anos 1980 e 1990: American Flagg! de Howard Chaykin (1983-1989); Marshal Law de Pat Mills e Kevin O'Neill (1987-1993) e Martha Washington de Frank Miller e Dave Gibbons (1990-1999). A proposta central é compreender como determinadas visões pessimistas sobre o futuro foram historicamente elaboradas e qual é o papel dessas obras de ficção na construção e apreensão da realidade em que estão inseridas e, a partir disso, estabelecer como as perspectivas de futuro divulgadas por essas HQs dialogam com mudanças político-sociais que estavam ocorrendo nos EUA no período final da chamada "Guerra Fria", que deu início a uma nova fase para o país como única superpotência mundial.
