This book is an authoritative digest of the latest developments in the mineral processing industry. Dozens of authors share their insights on how practitioners can develop earth resources more economically while simultaneously addressing vital factors ranging from sustainability to environmental stewardship. The book examines coal processing, surface forces and hydrophobicity, process improvements and environmental controls, dewatering and drying, gravity separations, industrial minerals flotation, base metal flotation, flotation equipment and practice, process reagents, magnetic and electrostatic separations, modeling and process control, and resource engineering. Important current issues such as gas hydrates, oil sands, secondary materials, metals and waste, and process waters are also discussed.

Coal Waste Impoundments

Coal Waste Impoundments

On October 11, 2000, a breakthrough of Martin County Coal Corporation's coal waste impoundment released 250 million gallons of slurry in near Inez, Kentucky. The 72-acre surface impoundment for coal processing waste materials broke through into a nearby underground coal mine. Although the spill caused no loss of human life, environmental damage was significant, and local water supplies were disrupted. This incident prompted Congress to request the National Research Council to examine ways to reduce the potential for similar accidents in the future. This book covers the engineering practices and standards for coal waste impoundments and ways to evaluate, improve, and monitor them; the accuracy of mine maps and ways to improve surveying and mapping of mines; and alternative technologies for coal slurry disposal and utilization. The book contains advice for multiple audiences, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Office of Surface Mining, and other federal agencies; state and local policymakers and regulators; the coal industry and its consultants; and scientists and engineers.

Advances in Contact Angle, Wettability and Adhesion, Volume 4

This is the fourth volume in the series "Advances in Contact Angle, Wettability and Adhesion" initiated to consolidate information and provide commentary on certain recent research aspects dealing with this important topic. Its predecessor Volumes 1, 2 and 3 were published in 2013, 2015 and 2018 respectively. This new book comprising 14 research and review articles is divided into four parts: Part 1: Contact Angle and Wettability Aspects; Part 2: Surface Free Energy and Surface Tension Determination; Part 3: Applied Aspects. The topics covered include: Contact Angle Determination of Talc Powders from Heat of Immersion Surface Wetting at Macro and Nanoscale Wettability of Wood Surfaces with W...

Mineral additives are widespread in industrial manufacturing processes. So-called mineral fillers are used to extend raw materials and cut costs. Recently minerals and associated inorganics have frequently been used for their functionality and other mineral-specific qualities. The emergence of nanoscale minerals parallels the global pursuit of nanotechnology. The use of these minerals plays an important role in low-cost, high-performance application of nanotechnology. This 21-chapter compilation is for mineral suppliers, industrial users of mineral fillers, and those concerned with new trends in mineral processing and nanotechnology. Contributions by leading international researchers highlight the emerging markets and applications of functional fillers and nanoscale minerals.

Rare Earth Metals and Minerals Industries

This book presents the current status and future prospects of rare earth elements with respect to a multitude of factors, including resource availability, production, and applications. Among the topics covered are the extraction of raw materials, alloying and compound production, applications, resource conservation through recycling, regulatory issues, and potential new resource streams. The chapters are authored by well-known technical experts in their fields, with decades of research, industrial, and governmental policy experience. The book is expected to serve as the first single source reference on rare earth minerals and metals aimed at students, scientists, technologists, government legislators, regulatory agencies, investors, and business leaders. It provides in-depth examination of the importance of rare earth elements to the global economy and their use in technological innovation, including energy, power, transportation, medicine, electronics, and chemical/petroleum industries.

Coal is an important fossil fuel resource for many nations due to its large remaining resources, relatively low production and processing cost and potential high energy intensity. Certain issues surround its utilisation, however, including emissions of pollutants and growing concern about climate change. The coal handbook: Towards cleaner production Volume 1 reviews the coal production supply chain from analysis to extraction and distribution.Part one explores coal characterisation and introduces the industrial use of coal as well as coal formation, petrography, reserves, sampling and analysis. Part two moves on to review coal extraction and preparation. Chapters highlight advances in coal m...
