The Future from the Past

The applications of zooarchaeological research can go far beyond the realms of the lab or the site report. These 18 papers are all concerned with the contributions archaeozoologists make to specific problems encountered in the management and conservation of our natural and cultural heritage. The volume is divided into two parts: Part 1 looks at Zooarchaeology and Wildlife Conservation Issues. Contributors explore a range of subjects, including: how information on past environments can be used to explain the behaviour and distribution of species in the present; whether it is feasible to reintroduce game into areas where the species have become locally extinct; and how collecting and reporting procedures are related to the interpretation of zooarchaeological data. Part 2 covers Archaeozoology and Heritage Management. Contributors discuss the position of archaeozoologists in museums, universities, and private archaeological companies; the role of archaeozoologists in assessing and selecting sites for protection or excavation; and the problem of the deterioration of zooarchaeological material currently held in collections.

Using the ecosystem concept as his starting point, the author examines the complex relationship between premodern armed forces and their environment at three levels: landscapes, living beings, and diseases. The study focuses on Europe's Meuse Region, well-known among historians of war as a battleground between France and Germany. By analyzing soldiers' long-term interactions with nature, this book engages with current debates about the ecological impact of the military, and provides new impetus for contemporary armed forces to make greater effort to reduce their environmental footprint.

The Exploitation and Cultural Importance of Sea Mammals

Humans are known to exploit plant and animal resources for a variety of purposes. Subsistence is the most obvious of these, but there are also social and technological reasons behind such activities, not to mention ideological and spiritual motives for exploitation. In order to maximise exploitation of resources, human often exploit ecotones, where several ecological zones exist in close proximity. The seashore is such an ecotone, and sea mammals are just one of many groups of resources who are available here. This volume looks to address some of the vast array of coastal adaptations that have occurred during the human past and the role that sea mammals have played in them.

Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York

In scarcely 200 pages, Professor Kuhns has surveyed the factors that compelled roughly 100,000 emigrants from the Palatinate, Wurtenberg, Zweibrucken, and other principalities in southern Germany to settle in Pennsylvania between 1683 and 1776 and establish a new way of life in their adopted homeland. Most of these immigrants were farmers, and their customs and manners are recounted in an examination of housing, provisions, agricultural methods, superstitions, and so forth. There is a chapter on language, literature, and education and a separate appendix on German family names. Perhaps the most informative chapter in the book covers the extraordinarily diverse religious life of these Protestant Germans, which, while dominated by the Lutheran and Reformed churches, also accommodated Moravians, Mennonites, Brethren, Dunkards, Seventh-Day Baptists, Schwenckfelders, and others.
