Marabout Women in Dakar
This rich ethnographic study explores the life and work of successful marabout women in Dakar. It is set against the background of their private family lives, of developments in Senegalese society, and of global changes. While including female experts in spirit possession and plant-based healing, it also gives a rare insight in the work of women who offer Islamic knowledge such as Arabic astrology, numerology, divination and prayer sessions. With the analysis of marabout women's work this study sheds light on the ways in which women's authority in esoteric knowledge is negotiated, legitimated, and publicly recognised in Dakar. The study focuses especially upon marabout women's strategies to gain their clients' trust. Reference to rural areas is a significant element in this process. This study thus contributes to an understanding of the gendered way in which trust and scepticism are related to marabouts' work and of the role of a connection between Dakar and the rural areas therein.
After the Tsunami

The Sung Home. Narrative, Morality, and the Kurdish Nation
The Sung Home tells the story of Kurdish singer-poets (dengbêjs) in Kurdistan in Turkey, who are specialized in the recital singing of historical songs. After a long period of silence, they returned to public life in the 2000s and are presented as guardians of history and culture. Their lyrics, life stories, and live performances offer fascinating insights into cultural practices, local politics and the contingencies of state borders. Decades of oppression have deeply politicized and moralized cultural and musical production. Through in-depth ethnographic analysis Hamelink highlights the variety of personal and social narratives within a society in turmoil. Set within the larger global stories of modernity, nationalism, and Orientalism, this study reflects on different ideas about what it means to create a Kurdish home.

Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies
The corpus-based approach has developed into a well established paradigm in translation studies and has been recognised as a principal reason for the revival of contrastive linguistics since the 1990s, while corpus-based contrastive and translation studies have in turn significantly expanded the scope of corpus linguistics. This book features a selection of twenty-three papers from the 2008 meeting of Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies (UCCTS), an international conference series launched to provide an international forum for the exploration of theoretical and practical issues pertaining to the creation and use of corpora in contrastive and translation studies. The papers in this collection represent the latest developments in corpus-based translation studies, corpus-based contrastive studies, parallel corpus development and bilingual lexicography. They are useful resources for researchers as well as postgraduates and their supervisors in translation studies, comparative and contrastive linguistics, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics.

Wat misschien het onmiddellijkst opvalt aan de honderd sonnetvormigheden waaruit Liedboek der oorlogen en feesten van al-Haqq bestaat: dat ze van zo door en door Semitische signatuur zijn, `op het zand gebaseerd . De woestijn de fameuze van Oud-Israël, tevens die van de Voorislamitisch-en-Islamitisch Arabische beschaving vormt de basis van Liedboek, dat voor het herhaaldelijk in het Oude Testament genoemde maar verloren gegane Boek der oorlogen van JWHW (die al-Haqq is geworden: een der negenennegentig namen van Allah de honderdste kent alleen Hij) in de plaats gekomen is ahw. Een en ander gaat met zaken als de viering van de vierde en de vijfde mei, plus andere verjaardagen, met pseudolandloperij in Frankrijk en berichtgeving van bezoek aan Artis ooit ongedwongen samen. Uiterst geconcentreerd en zeer lezervriendelijk is Hamelinks poëzie.
