This book seeks to extend the boundaries of aviation psychology in two interrelated ways: by broadening the focus of aviation psychology beyond the flight deck to the whole aviation system; and by discussing new theoretical developments which are shaping this applied discipline. A key feature of these theoretical advances is that they are grounded in a more developed, ecologically valid, understanding of practice. Among the issues addressed in this new integration of theory and practice are the following: what goes on in the flight deck is dependent on the wider organisational context; human factors issues in aircraft maintenance and grounding are critical to aviation safety; our capacity to...
This useful sourcebook contains 12 chapters written by experienced classroom practitioners in Hong Kong. One theme appears constantly in these chapters: that in the English language classroom, whether at primary, secondary, or tertiary levels, high interest and positive motivation occur through active learning when literary texts, literary techniques and literariness are featured. In this book, full coverage is given to the use of poetry, prose and drama in language learning and teaching at all three levels of the education system. The tasks and activities described here have been shown to work with all bands of students. This book is ideally suited both for practising teachers and participants in teacher education programmes in Hong Kong and the rest of S.E. Asia. It will be particularly useful for primary and secondary teachers of English wishing to incorporate appropriate and relevant teaching activities so as to meet the goals of the new Target Oriented English Language Curriculum.

This is the first comprehensive book on pilot judgment. It provides a clear understanding of pilot judgment emphasizing how it can be applied to improving safety in aviation. The author brings together a rich store of personal flying experiences combined with a strong base of personal academic research to support the concepts presented. The book gives not only a strong emphasis to the application of judgment to aviation but also lays particular stress on the principles needed in how to learn, teach and evaluate judgment. For pilots, the main benefits to be gained from the book will be a foundation of knowledge and teaching to enable them to make better, safer decisions. For flight instructors, it teaches how to teach and evaluate judgment in flight students. In addition to pilots and flight instructors, the readership obviously includes aviation classroom instructors, scientists doing aviation-related research and aviation safety specialists.
The ecosystem approach to aquaculture provides the conceptual guideline to spatial planning and management. This publication describes the three major steps in spatial planning and management, namely, zoning, site selection and design of an aquaculture management area, or AMA. The aim of this open access book is to review and analyse the goods and services of bivalve shellfish. How they are defined, what determines the ecological functions that are the basis for the goods and services, what controversies in the use of goods and services exist, and what is needed for sustainable exploitation of bivalves from the perspective of the various stakeholders. The book is focused on the goods and services, and not on impacts of shellfish aquaculture on the benthic environment, or on threats like biotoxins; neither is it a shellfish culture handbook although it can be used in evaluating shellfish culture. The reviews and analysis are based on case studies that exemplify the concept, and show the strengths and weaknesses of the current applications. The multi-authored reviews cover ecological, economic and social aspects of bivalve goods and services. The book provides new insights for scientists, students, shellfish producers, policy advisors, nature conservationists and decision makers. This book is open access under the CC BY license.
