Year of the Fox

Year of the Fox is the third volume in the continuing saga of Justin and Sophie Cataphlates, a very unlikely husband and wife crime-fighting team. Set in the year 1018, Justin continues as the Treasurer of the Roman Empire (which we now call Byzantine), while Sophie is the chief lady-in-waiting to Princess Zoe, the oldest daughter of Emperor Constantine, one of the two reigning emperors. While carrying out their duties and raising their daughter and son, the couple has to deal with the death of a senator, the forging of gold coins, and the theft of a priceless relic. Then, the fun begins, as they accompany Zoe on a hazardous trip to Rome, the long-ago abandoned capital of the empire where the papacy itself is in danger! As before, the Fatimid Caliph of Egypt is lurking in the wings!

Memories of Belonging is a three-generation oral-history study of the offspring of southern Italians who migrated to Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1913. Supplemented with the interviewees’ private documents and working from U.S. and Italian archives, Christa Wirth documents a century of transatlantic migration, assimilation, and later-generation self-identification. Her research reveals how memories of migration, everyday life, and ethnicity are passed down through the generations, altered, and contested while constituting family identities. The fact that not all descendants of Italian migrants moved into the U.S. middle class, combined with their continued use of hyphenated identities, points to a history of lived ethnicity and societal exclusion. Moreover, this book demonstrates the extent of forgetting that is required in order to construct an ethnic identity.

This book presents a review of the existing literature on natural mycotoxins to create a comprehensive reference for mycotoxin levels. Each entry includes contamination, concentration rate, mostly mean mycotoxin concentration of organs (human and animal) and country of origin of the sample. Due to the serious spoilage and health issues the presence of mycotoxins can cause, it is imperative that corresponding scientists, health institutions and the food and feed industries have a more qualified understanding of mycotoxins in living things. To this end, Natural Mycotoxin Contamination in Humans and Animals provides an excellent resource. The present book complements the series of the author’s previous books, Mycotoxins in Feedstuffs and Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs, in that it is a review of the literature to create a comprehensive reference for mycotoxin levels. As with Mycotoxins and their Metabolites in Humans and Animals, the focus remains the same, but the scope now covers natural mycotoxins only.
