Whatever has been written about Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee so far doesn’t do justice to his grand and multi-faceted personality. This leading sentiment is behind the motivation of writing the present book. A lot has been written on Dr. Mookerjee’s political endeavours. However, his persona is immeasurably significant beyond his political life. The simplest explanation of his life proclaims him master of social, educational and economic thought. This book is an attempt to know how Dr. Mookerjee became a powerful personality, an educationist, a thinker, and an administrator. The focal point is to explore the new experiments and innovations brought out into the world of education by him. He...
After retirement I was exuberated to write a book of biography of Bhabapagla in English for propagation of Bhabapagla in the world. My Guru brethren, Sri Sathy Chand Chowdhury / Swami Somesananda Giri, the councillor of Bhabapagla, Madhusudan Saha, Tushar Bhattachariya, Sujas Kar, K.P. Saha etc. many disciples of Bhabapagla. Specially whenever I encountered Bhabapagla at Kalna I inquired Sathay Chand Chowdhuri residing at Kalna in my young life. Moreover I learned a biography of Bhabapagla, Paramguru Bhabapagla authored by Tomonash Bandopadhyay, a renowned Professor. The style of talking and smiling captivated me. Whenever a new- comer would arrive in the hermitage, he used to inquire the cause of arrival and whereabouts in the style of good manner in such a way that everyone was bemused. Being initiated by Bhabapagla in the middle of May on Sunday, 1983 during Mahapuja/ Great worship of Ma Bhabani Kali in the temple at Kalna situated at Bardhaman District of West Bengal.Thenceforth I was determined to write this holy book.
In 1974 India joined the elite roster of nuclear world powers when it exploded its first nuclear bomb. But the technological progress that facilitated that feat was set in motion many decades before, as India sought both independence from the British and respect from the larger world. Over the course of the twentieth century, India metamorphosed from a marginal place to a serious hub of technological and scientific innovation. It is this tale of transformation that Robert S. Anderson recounts in Nucleus and Nation. Tracing the long institutional and individual preparations for India’s first nuclear test and its consequences, Anderson begins with the careers of India’s renowned scientists...
The word ‘lok’ means public and ‘manya’ means accepted. Thus lokmanya means a person who has been accepted by people. In his context it means accepted by people as their leader. ‘Lokmanya’ Keshav Bal Gangadhar Tilak was recognized by the British as the Father of the Indian National Movement because of activities that stirred feelings of nationalism in the hearts of every Indian. Though his ideals often differed from Mahatma Gandhi; his views regarding crucial matters were sometimes accepted many times by Gandhiji. A revolutionary and social reformer in the true sense of the word; he was a freedom fighter who elicited esteem from all; even his enemies. His indomitable spirit was a...
This biography is a short yet comprehensive overview of the life of Meghnad Saha, the mastermind behind the frequently used Saha equations and a strong contributor to the foundation of science in India. This book is free of most academic tec...
This study on Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee will help the readers understand the circumstances under which he assumed the leading role in the carving out the province of West Bengal from the littoral that was soon to become the province of East Pakistan. The role of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee in demanding the separation of the Hindu majority districts in the western half of Bengal from the proposed East Pakistan has not been studied so far or documented. The ‘Right’ historians today try to view it as a great triumph for the Hindus while ‘Secular’ ones try to paint Syama Prasad as an ‘arch communalist’. Underlying both versions of the story is an assumption that the partition of Beng...
The name of Raman is familiar to science not only through the effect that bears his name, but also due to derivative names such as stimulated Raman scattering and Raman laser. However, other than that he won the Nobel Prize, little is generally know about the man himself. But the story is fascinating. Raman fiercely cherished his independence and rejected government support for his research. A sharp critic of many government policies, he was often misunderstood and maligned, though his commitment to science and to its growth in India never wavered. Venkataraman's account deals with all these aspects of Raman's life and work, besides placing them in a proper perspective vis-a-vis the overall Indian scene. Numerous quotations help capture the mood and excitement of those times. The book is not only a lively biography of a colorful personality, but also required reading for anyone with a serious interest in and concern for Indian science.
