Improving Crop Resistance to Abiotic Stress

The latest update on improving crop resistance to abiotic stress using the advanced key methods of proteomics, genomics and metabolomics. The wellbalanced international mix of contributors from industry and academia cover work carried out on individual crop plants, while also including studies of model organisms that can then be applied to specific crop plants

Abiotic stress represents the main constraint for agriculture, affecting plant growth and productivity worldwide. Yield losses in agriculture will be potentiated in the future by global warming, increasing contamination, and reduced availability of fertile land. The challenge for agriculture of the present and future is that of increasing the food supply for a continuously growing human population under environmental conditions that are deteriorating in many areas of the world. Minimizing the effects of diverse types of abiotic stresses represents a matter of general concern. Research on all topics related to abiotic stress tolerance, from understanding the stress response mechanisms of plan...

Temperature Adaptation in a Changing Climate

Cold adaptation is a much neglected field in the minds of climate change researchers and policy makers. However, increasing fluctuations in temperature means that the risk of cold stress will pose an increasing threat to both wild and cultivated plants and animals, with frost injury expected to cause devastating damage to crops on an increasingly large scale. Conversely, species already adapted to cold seasonality are declining in numbers and threatening both wildlife and human food sources. Thus, improving shared knowledge of the biological mechanisms of cold adaptation in plants and animals will help prevent major losses of crops and genetic resources in the future. This book is the first to focus on the mechanistic similarities between species in their responses to cold in a multi-organism approach that addresses the challenges and impacts of climate change on cold adaptation in micro-organisms (including pathogens), invertebrates, economically and scientifically important plants and vertebrates in both terrestrial and marine environments. The book concludes with a focus on the interactions between organisms, exploring common mechanisms in cold adaptation and dormancy.

This book addresses the use of food hydrocolloids as agents for encapsulating biological active ingredients. It details the challenges of poorly-controlled rate of hydration, thickness, decrease in viscosity upon storage, and susceptibility to microbial contamination. Food Hydrocolloids as Encapsulating Agents in Delivery Systems briefly describes various emerging biomaterials including food gums, starches, beta glucans, and proteins for their potential role as wall material in the development of nutraceutical delivery systems. Further, it describes different techniques of fabrication of nanodelivery systems. Features: Provides an introduction to food hydrocolloids as encapsulating agents Covers starches and their derivatives as delivery systems Includes gum-based delivery systems Discusses the classification, isolation, and purification of protein delivery systems This book would be helpful to food scientists and pharmaceutical scientists working in areas including nanotechnology, polymer chemistry, and nutraceutical delivery, as well as regulators and government researchers in US FDA, USDA, and UK FSA regulatory agencies.

Advances in Research on Vegetable Production Under a Changing Climate Vol. 1

A considerable change in climate at a global level will impact the vegetable cultivation and agriculture as a whole; subsequently affecting the world's food supply. Climate change per se is not necessarily harmful; the problems arise from extreme events that are difficult to predict (erratic rainfall patterns and unpredictable high and low temperatures), and consequently reduce crop productivity. Vegetables are in general more succulent (have 90% water) and are more sensitive to climatic vagaries. Sudden changes in temperature coupled with irregular precipitation at any phase of crop growth can affect the normal growth, flowering, pollination, fruit setting, fruit development and fruit ripen...

Grape and Wine Biotechnology

Grape and Wine Biotechnology is a collective volume divided into 21 chapters focused on recent advances in vine pathology and pests, molecular tools to control them, genetic engineering and functional analysis, wine biotechnology including molecular techniques to study Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces yeast in enology, new fermentative applications of nonconventional yeasts in wine fermentation, biological aging on lees and wine stabilization, advanced instrumental techniques to detect wine origin and frauds, and many other current applications useful for researchers, lecturers, and vine or wine professionals. The chapters have been written by experts from different universities and research centers of 13 countries being representative of the knowledge, research, and know-how of many wine regions worldwide.
