Industrial foundations are foundations that own companies. Typically, they combine charitable and business goals. Some global companies such as IKEA, Robert Bosch or the Tata Group are foundation-owned, but nowhere are they as numerous as in Denmark. Three of the four largest Danish companies - the pharma company Novo Nordisk, the shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk, and the Carlsberg brewery - are all foundation-owned. Surprisingly, very little has been written about what industrial foundations are, and how they operate. The Danish Industrial Foundations provides a comprehensive overview. The book covers aspects such as theory, law, taxation, economic importance, company performance, governance and philanthropy. The book is the result of a large collaborative research project, led by the author, on industrial foundations. [Subject: Business, Economics, Industrial Foundations]
The economic importance of the non-profit sector is growing rapidly in the USA and Europe. However, the law has not kept abreast with its development. The European Court of Justice has extended certain freedoms of the EC Treaty to non-profit organisations, and more case law is expected to follow in the near future, but the observations, theories, solutions and legal and non-legal rules in this field are manifold. The chances of harmonising the law on a European level are slim. Despite these differences, a common core of international corporate governance problems and regulatory solutions can be seen. This volume of essays brings together a variety of international experts from both corporate governance and governance of non-profit organisations to compare the two areas and explore the lessons that can be learned regarding comparative corporate governance for non-profit organisations.
This is a story about the American financier and PR genius, Bill Browder. In the 1990s and through the 2000s, Bill Browder built the largest foreign investment fund in Russia. He was a keen fan of Russia's president Vladimir Putin, until several tax issues, a ban from Russia and a dead tax advisor changed all that. For more than a decade, Bill Browder has pushed the story of his dead “lawyer” Sergei Magnitsky worldwide; a story, which is distorted at best, at worst entirely false. With huge fanfare, he has created a US human rights law in the name of his dead tax advisor. Bill Browder has been a central figure in the worldwide stories about laundering of Russian money, which have been fi...

This book outlines the origins of Danish Capitalism and prosperity, from a poor and devastated minor state in the 19th century to a consolidated universal mixed economy welfare state at the end of the 20th century. The book argues that firm-based innovation drove Danish prosperity and redistributive capacity. It is a comprehensive but manageable examination of the institutions and choices that shaped a highly innovative and wealthy nation. The book relies on history and economic theory, presents commonly accepted narratives and theories, and contributes new explanations. Therefore, the book also traces both antecedents and the current state of 20th-century capitalism in Denmark and particular outcomes and critical institutions such as firm age, the labor market, and pension schemes. The book will be of interest to academics in business history and economic policy, as well as policymakers and all those interested in mixed economy studies.
