L'Archipel des Antilles est un archipel riche de ses diversités : humaines, linguistiques, paysagères. La langue, et singulièrement la langue créole, est une de ses richesses née de la rencontre, sous ces latitudes, d'hommes de races, de cultures et de conditions différentes. Et parmi tous les genres du langage figurent les proverbes qui sont de véritables indicateurs du génie linguistique d'une ethnie donnée. Les Antillais ont su en créer, tout comme ils ont su adapter ceux qui sont venus d'autres cultures en les naturalisant. Mais outre cette aptitude à manier la langue dans ses subtilités, l'auteur entend réfléchir sur l'articulation qui se dégage entre la parémiologie (science qui s'occupe des proverbes) et l'éthique. Car il défend l'idée que le langage dévoile le sujet et que tous ces genres, parmi lesquels les proverbes, en font de même.
