The Legacy of Serbia's Great War
In the winter of 1915, following the invasion of Serbia by the Central Powers, the Serbian Army retreated across the mountains of Albania and Montenegro together with thousands of civilians. Around 240,000 lost their lives. Today, the story of the retreat is little known, except in Serbia where it is represents the heroic Serbian sacrifice in the Great War. In this book Alex Tomić examines the centenary events memorializing the First World War with the retreat at its core, and provides a persuasive account of the ways in which the remembrance of Serbian history has been manipulated for political purposes. Whether through commemorations, ceremonies, or grass- root initiatives, she demonstrates how these have been used as distractions from the more recent unexamined past and in doing so provides an important new perspective on the cultural history of commemoration.

The late Middle Ages saw the emergence of professional jurists as a new functionary elite. The study approaches this phenomenon by focusing on a singular individual: Dietrich von Bocksdorf, Professor of Canon Law in Leipzig, learned counselor to the elector of Saxony, bishop of Naumburg. The book thereby breaks new ground. It offers not only a biography, but explores large and previously unused and largely unknown collections of more than 500 papers from the legal practice, written by the Leipzig Ordinarius. Based on this unique material the book examines for the first time spheres of influence, circles of clients and occupational fields of an individual late medieval german jurist. Legal opinions (“consilia”) and pleadings, but as well working tools for the emerging learned practice of “Common Saxon Law” made by Dietrich von Bocksdorf, provide deep insights into the beginnings of the epochal change from the traditional-archaic jurisdiction of the Middle Ages to the scholarly and written practice of law in the early modern world.

Ruins of Modernity
This book maps the genesis and decline of a building thought by many to represent a radical break in Mendelsohn's thinking -- his first step towards a rational form of expression. The reevaluation of the building also provides an opportunity for a debate on the larger issue of the conservation of modern structures. What are we to make of buildings that no longer perform their intended function? Is there a way to carry out a project of conservation that is not a literal attempt to turn back the clock, to preserve a 'dead' monument? Through texts and speculative projects, Ruins of Modernity explores possible approaches to this increasingly acute problem. The endpiece -- a presentation of John McAslan's work on Mendelsohn and Chermayev's Bexhill Pavilion -- documents one actual solution.
Beiträge zur Entstehung und Entwicklung der Stadt Brandenburg im Mittelalter
Die "Historische Kommission zu Berlin" betreibt die Erforschung der Landesgeschichte und der Historischen Landeskunde Berlin-Brandenburgs bzw. Brandenburg-Preußens in Form von wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen, Vorträgen, Tagungen und Veröffentlichungen sowie durch Serviceleistungen. Dabei kooperiert die Kommission auch mit anderen Institutionen und begleitet wissenschaftliche und praktische Vorhaben von allgemeinem öffentlichen Interesse. In der Schriftenreihe werden die Ergebnisse der einzelnen wissenschaftlichen Projekte der Kommission veröffentlicht.
Die Stadt in der Kirche
Kaum eine andere Pfarrkirche des Landes Brandenburg besitzt eine so reiche Ausstattung wie die Marienkirche in Bernau. Dazu gehören das imposante Retabel des Hauptaltars und einige weitere vorreformatorische Stücke. Vor allem aber wuchs sie vom 16. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert. Zu erwähnen sind hier die Taufe und die Kanzel, ein bedeutender Emporenbilderzyklus, verschiedene Gestühle und Beichtkammern sowie zahlreiche Memorialbilder und Fragmente eines Orgelprospektes von Hans Scherer. Diesem kirchen-, kultur- und stadtgeschichtlich interessanten Ensemble widmete sich im November 2015 eine interdisziplinäre Tagung unter Beteiligung von Bau- und Kunsthistorikern, Kirchen- und Liturgiegeschichtlern, Orgelexperten, Campanologen, Epigrafikern und Restauratoren. Der Band dokumentiert deren Ergebnisse und bietet in Form eines Kurzinventars einen vollständigen Überblick des Ausstattungsbestands.
