The Future of Teaching English for Academic Purposes

As a result of current global and international forces, teaching English for academic purposes (EAP) is going through the most dynamic period in its rather short history. The internationalization of higher education, English further solidifying its role as the lingua franca every single day, and the increasing number of higher education institutions around the globe opting for instruction in the medium of English (EMI) are all contributing forces behind this book. The text disentangles the conflicting views and beliefs regarding the standards, provision and practices of EAP. Across its chapters, it closely looks at the world of EAP through the lenses of academic practice, learners, curriculum development, program implementation, and teaching and assessment practices. This book will guide all stakeholders of EAP settings to better understand ways in which research and teaching interact, and inform each other from a number of vital and relevant perspectives.

Pedagogies in English for Academic Purposes

As the delivery of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) continues to expand internationally, so too must the literature available to support teaching. This volume showcases some of the research-informed work in this exciting and complex field, providing insights into EAP pedagogies employed in a diverse range of contexts. Drawing on the work of practitioners and practitioner-researchers, it responds to the repeated calls for a firmer link between theory, research and practice in language teaching, and provides a much-needed focus on pedagogy. From contexts where English is the principal dominant societal language or one of several official languages, to those where English-medium instruction ...

A Tribute to Prof. Dr. Da Ruan

This volume is a tribute to Professor Dr Da Ruan, who passed away suddenly on July 31, 2011, aged 50. The flood of emails that spread throughout the fuzzy logic research community with the tragic news was testimony to the respect and liking felt for this remarkable man. Da was a hardworking , highly productive scientist who, during his short life, published 35 books and more than 250 research papers in highly ranked journals and conference proceedings. He established two successful conferences, FLINS and ISKE, as well as the international journal, JCIS. This book is a collection of contributions from 88 of Da's academic friends from 47 institutes, presented in 60 chapters and over 70 picture...

Frame and Generic Space

The average lifespan of a house is somewhere around 100 years. During that time it will see many mutations in household composition and related spatial rituals. Designers are therefore faced with the task of giving form to something that is constantly subject to change. Many studies into flexibility focus on the changeable, on movable partitions and variation in the internal layout. The present study takes not the changeable but the permanent as its departure-point. The permanent--i.e. the more durable component of the house or building--constitutes the frame within which change can take place, while the frame defines the generic space, the space in which change can occur.

Modern Schools

Modern Schools: A Century of Design for Education is a comprehensive survey of modern K-12 schools from Frank Lloyd Wright to Morphosis—an in-depth design study that explores the fundamental relationship between architecture, education, and the design of contemporary learning environments. Its focus is on the underlying design themes and characteristic features that support and enhance basic aspects of learning and, in the process, create an architectural expression that is both meaningful and lasting. The breadth of its scope includes influences of contemporary educational ideas and practices, related design concepts and strategies, and most importantly, the resulting impact of both on re...
