From the Earth's Core to Outer Space focuses on four themes: (1) Evolving Earth’s crust, (2) Changing Baltic Sea, (3) Climate Change, and (4) Planet Earth, third stone from Sun. Redescriptions
The 2006 volume of Redescriptions has two main themes, the political principles and practices of democratic political representation and the temporal dimension of politics, discussed in six articles and two review articles. Different principles and organizational arrangements play a key role in theories of political representation, in the democratization of suffrage and in the present debates on the modes of equal representation of women. The articles discussing the proper time for politics also refer to issues closely connected to debates on democracy and representation today.
Redescriptions
With nine articles neatly combining contemporary theorizing and historical approaches to political thought and concepts, this volume of Redescriptions draws attention to two topics several of the contributions share. In these articles rhetoric serves both as a style of political theorizing and as a medium of conceptual change. In addition, the relationship of political thought and practice to religion is discussed as a subject matter as well as in the sense of a cultural heritage that is used by the political agents for contemporary purposes.
The Policies of Inclusion
Welfare policies and the ideas of well-being are linked with the ideas of good life. However, the meaning of good life, i.e. what is considered as ‘good life’ gets its meanings contextually. This means that we need to study the ideas of good life in time. The ideas of good life express social and political values and they are articulated in particular terms in particular time and place. The changing ideas of welfare and the ideas of changing approaches on welfare, well-being and knowledge production related to them have been discussed widely in international and Finnish research contexts. This volume is the second – and last – part of publications which stem from the 20th Anniversary Seminar of the Research Unit on Disability at University of Eastern Finland. It offers a multivoiced collection of research discussions from research in the fields of welfare and inclusion.
Limits of Liberation
How far are the real lives of millions of poor women really catered for in liberation and feminist theologies? Vuola argues here that traditional liberation theology's notion of praxis (as in L .Boff and E. Dussel) is limited by its essentialist notion of 'poor' and its neglect of the issue of poor women's reproductive rights. Classical feminist theologies, on the other hand, are fraught with their own essentialist notions ('women's experience'). Both discourses are inadequate to deal with poor women's suffering: widespread maternal mortality, high rates of botched, illegal abortions, and an overall lack of reproductive rights. As a response to this lack, Vuola nurtures a form of Latin American feminist liberation theology that addresses directly the suffering and death of these millions of women.
Agonistic Mourning
Drawing on a range of philosophical, anthropological and political theories, Athena Athanasiou offers a new way of thinking about agonistic performativity with its critical connections to national and gender politics and alongside the political intricacies of affectivity, courage and justice. Through an ethnographic account of the urban feminist and antinationalist movement Women in Black of Belgrade during the Yugoslav wars, she shows that we might understand their dissident politics of mourning as a means to refigure political life beyond sovereign accounts of subjectivity and agency.

Following the profile of recent issues of the Yearbook, volume 13 (2009) of Redescriptions focuses on contemporary debates around the concept of democracy. Several articles, by scholars from different fields (political theory, philosophy, history, rhetoric, women's studies, law), discuss the present state and future prospects of democracy, its relationship to other concepts (deliberation, rhetoric, parliament, majority vs. minority) as well as its (in)compatibility with the power of the courts and the expertise.
