Philosophy of Latin America
This volume contains articles on topics within a variety of disciplines: political philosophy, ethics, history of philosophy, formal logic, philosophy of science and technology, as well as philosophical interpretation of literature. It is relevant to philosophers and researchers in these disciplines. It addresses the question of a genuine Latin American local, national and continental cultural identity being a challenge to philosophy.
Divine Democracy
Liberal democracies assume neutrality toward the religious beliefs of its citizens; the legal system is supposed to determine guilt or innocence without religious prejudice. First coined by Carl Schmitt, political theology questions these widely held assumptions. It describes how political and legal concepts were derived from theological ones, dissolving the connection between the public sphere and secularism. In this intellectual history, Miguel Vatter reconstructs how and why the discourse of political theology was adopted and repurposed by anti-Schmitian thinkers to bolster the legitimacy of liberal democratic government. Critical Marxism in Mexico
In Critical Marxism in Mexico, Stefan Gandler, coming from the tradition of the Frankfurt School, reveals the contributions that Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez and Bolívar Echeverría have made to universal thought. While in recent times Latin America has taken its distance from global power centers, and reorganised its political and economic relations, in philosophy the same tendency is barely visible. Critical Marxism in Mexico is a contribution to the reorganisation of international philosophical discussion, with Critical Theory as the point of departure. Despite having studied in Europe, where philosophical Eurocentrism remains virulent, Gandler opens his eyes to another tradition of modernity and offers an account of the life and philosophy of Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez and Bolívar Echeverría, former senior faculty members at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

Los hijos de los dioses
Descubrir qué es lo mexicano, cuáles son los rasgos que mejor describen el ser nacional, las particularidades de su cultura y su devenir histórico, ha sido una vieja obsesión que ha ocupado a numerosos intelectuales, científicos sociales, artistas y hombres de letras de México desde, por lo menos, finales del siglo XIX. Hacia mediados del siglo pasado, un grupo de jóvenes universitarios –filósofos en su mayoría–, se propusieron actualizar las búsquedas sobre la identidad nacional haciendo uso de un inusitado arsenal teórico. El presente libro explora las representaciones identitarias formuladas por estos intelectuales, quienes dieron en llamarse Grupo filosófico Hiperión. Las propuestas y tesis que englobaron bajo el nombre de "filosofía de lo mexicano" o "filosofía de la mexicanidad" son examinadas aquí bajo la lupa de las distintas tramas que dieron sustento, significado y proyección a sus planteamientos sobre lo mexicano.
