These proceedings are from the Tenth International Conference on Representations of Algebras and Related Topics (ICRA X) held at The Fields Institute. The Lie Theory Workshop, founded by Joe Wolf (UC, Berkeley), has been running for over two decades. These workshops have been sponsored by the NSF, noting the talks have been seminal in describing new perspectives in the field covering broad areas of current research. At the beginning, the top universities in California and Utah hosted the meetings which continue to run on a quarterly basis. Experts in representation theory/Lie theory from various parts of the US, Europe, Asia (China, Japan, Singapore, Russia), Canada, and South and Central America were routinely invited to give talks at these meetings. The term ``categorification'' was introduced by Louis Crane in 1995 and refers to the process of replacing set-theoretic notions by the corresponding category-theoretic analogues. This text mostly concentrates on algebraical aspects of the theory, presented in the historical perspective, but also contains several topological applications, in particular, an algebraic (or, more precisely, representation-theoretical) approach to categorification. Over the last three decades representation theory of groups, Lie algebras and associative algebras has undergone a rapid development through the powerful tool of almost split sequences and the Auslander-Reiten quiver. Further insight into the homology of finite groups has illuminated their representation theory. The study of Hopf algebras and non-commutative geometry is another new branch of representation theory which pushes the classical theory further. All this can only be seen in connection with an understanding of the structure of special classes of rings. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to some modern developments in: Lie algebras, quantum groups, Hopf algebras and algebraic groups; non-commutative algebraic geometry; representation theory of finite groups and cohomology; the structure of special classes of rings.
Krichever and Novikov introduced certain classes of infinite dimensional Lie algebras to extend the Virasoro algebra and its related algebras to Riemann surfaces of higher genus. The author of this book generalized and extended them to a more general setting needed by the applications. Examples of applications are Conformal Field Theory, Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten models, moduli space problems, integrable systems, Lax operator algebras, and deformation theory of Lie algebra. Furthermore they constitute an important class of infinite dimensional Lie algebras which due to their geometric origin are still manageable.
