Visse hensyn er første bind i romanserien om fem søskende og deres kærlighedsliv. Romanen åbner i påsken 1954 hjemme hos familien Gregersen. Familien bor i en af de københavnske omegnskommuner, hvor, som en ven af forældrene siger det, den slags mennesker man troede kun fandtes i romaner og ugebladsnoveller, lever i bedste velgående. De to ældste, Karen på 21 og Erik på 20, har deres „udkårne“ med til middagen. De tre andre, Bo på 16, Rune på 12 og Maj på 11, er endnu for unge til at have nogen fast; men det med kærligheden optager dem meget. I de tre år romanen spænder over når alle fem søskende at gøre deres første erfaringer. Ved slutningen, i julen 1957, er det alligevel stadig kun de to ældste som har – eller vil have – deres kærlighedsliv kendt af familien. De andre har gjort den erfaring, at tavshed tit er at foretrække, fordi så mange hensyn spiller ind. I denne familiemiddag sker der en brat afbrydelse, fulgt af en afsløring, som får en af de fem søskende til at se sin familie i et nyt lys, ikke mindst sin rige far.
