If the marine fishing industry is to survive into the future, innovative approaches are necessary. Recognising that market incentives have the potential to improve fisheries management, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has been established to harness these incentives. The work of the MSC translates through from sustainable fishery management certification, to labelling of fish and sea food products, allowing consumers to use their choice and buying power to select eco-labelled products from MSC certified fisheries. This exciting new book covers all aspects of the new eco-labelling initiative developed under the sponsorship of the MSC. Contents include details of the MSC and its certifica...
This book addresses ecological and environmental issues associated with responsible and sustainable marine fisheries. It includes 22 chapters and has been developed from the Conference on Responsible Fisheries in the Marine Ecosystem held in Iceland in October 2001. Contents include: a global overview of marine capture fisheries; legal protection for marine ecosystems; dynamics of marine ecosystems; the role of man in marine ecosystems; and incorporating ecosystem considerations in fisheries management. The book has a subject index.
Includes the keynote addresses and papers presented on the conference themes that covered: environment, ecosystem biology, habitat, diversity and oceanography; population biology and resource assessment; harvesting and conservation strategies for resource management; technology requirements; monitoring, compliance and controls; a review of existing policies and instruments; and governance and management. It also provides the perspectives of participating experts and the conference Steering Committee. The general conclusions of the conference contain the elements that must be addressed and undertaken if deep-sea fish resources are to be sustained and their habitat protected to ensure productivity and safeguard deep-sea biodiversity. The second volume of the proceedings includes posters and corresponding papers presented at the conference as well as papers from workshops held prior to the main conference.

As invoked by the cover art (Flow, 2020) by world-renowned creative director, Kashiwa Sato, the experiment is creating a small wave of change that sits within a larger wave, supporting and generating ...

The world needs nutrition-driven agriculture that operates within planetary boundaries. But a recent OECD report on New Zealand's environmental performance shows how our agricultural sector's continual push at those boundaries poses grave risks. Meantime, a range of health indices show that how and what we eat makes many of us ill. Plus, valuable revenue and jobs are lost because we don't champion the great food we do produce. The agriculture, health, tourism and environment sectors can engage to pull us back inside those boundaries. Robust policies, new solutions and best practice for sustainable food production and consumption are needed. Thirty-one experts give their views on how New Zealand can lead the way.
