This volume contains the proceedings of the EMBO-NATO-CEC Advanced Research Workshop on "Guanine-nucleotide binding proteins. Common structural and functional properties", which was held in Renesse, The Netherlands, August 6-11, 1988. The transmission of information is one of the most important processes in cellular life and involves the most diverse physiological functions. The cellular membrane, as the obligatory target for external signals, harbours complex pathways transducing the signals from the receptors of the external stimuli to the cytoplasmic effector. Heterotrimeric proteins are fundamental components of these pathways. Other proteins that are monomeric may be found associated wi...
Exercise testing is widely used all over the world to assess functional capacity in athletes, healthy subjects and patients. According to recent surveys, the interest in ergometry is still growing in almost all fields of medicine, especially in private practice. Furthermore, there has been an exponential growth in the number of publications on exercise testing in the last years. Several consensus and task force conferences have dealt with exercise testing and published recommendations on standardization and guidelines in ergometry. These factors have, in combination, initiated an upsurge in research and clinical use of exercise testing. At the 6th International Seminar on Ergometry the lates...
In a world where individuals become increasingly responsible for their financial well-being, and where the complexity of financial markets and products is growing, financial education becomes crucial. Although it is well accepted to introduce financial education in compulsory education, there is no consensus on the optimal way to implement financial education. This book explores the current state and the future challenges of financial education in five European countries: Belgium, Estonia, Italy, Slovakia, and the Netherlands. Moreover, it provides a comprehensive review of the academic literature on financial literacy. The book is a product of a strategic partnership with professionals from 14 partners, including universities, secondary schools and intermediary organisations dealing with financial literacy promotion. The EUFin project supported by this partnership aims to develop evidence-based didactical material for financial literacy education for tertiary and secondary education levels and exchange best-practices.
Leonidas Zervas, Emeritus Professor of organic chemistry at the University of Athens, and past president of the National Academy of Greece, cele brated his seventieth birthday this past year. For almost fifty years Zervas devoted his scientific skills and perception to the advancement of chemistry, particularly in the field of peptides and proteins. Indeed, his efforts, along with those of his teacher, co-worker, and friend, Max Bergmann, laid the foundations for a new era in the chemistry of peptides and proteins. Many of his colleagues and former students felt that it would be most at this time to honor him with a commemorative volume. They appropriate have contributed to this volume chapters describing some of their work and reviewing the advancements in particular areas of polypeptide chemistry. They dedicate this volume to Leonidas Zervas as an expression of their esteem and appreciation for the role he has played for the past half-century in the field of peptides and proteins.
During the past few decades we have witnessed an era of remarkable growth in the field of molecular biology. In 1950 very little was known of the chemical constitution of biological systems, the manner in which information was transmitted from one organism to another, or the extent to which the chemical basis of life is unified. The picture today is dramati cally different. We have an almost bewildering variety of information de tailing many different aspects of life at the molecular level. These great advances have brought with them some breath-taking insights into the molecular mechanisms used by nature for replicating, distributing, and modifying biological information. We have learned a ...
Hormonal Proteins and Peptides, Volume II reviews extensively the knowledge on the biology and chemistry of the protein and peptide hormones. This book presents the structures of the various protein and peptide hormones. Organized into three chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the various aspects of the structure and function of adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) with reference to the ability to stimulate the adrenal gland of the rat, amphibian melanophores, and adipose tissues of the rat and rabbit. This text then reviews the isolation, purification, and elucidation of the amino acid sequence of corticotropins from various species. Other chapters consider the structures of porcine and human ACTH. This book discusses as well the working hypothesis for studies on the secondary-tertiary structure of peptide hormones. The final chapter deals with the abbreviations used for amino acids and protecting groups. This book is a valuable resource for peptide chemists, biologists, biochemists, and research workers.
Peptides covers the proceedings of the Sixth European Peptide Symposium, held in Athens, Greece on September 1963. This symposium brings together numerous works on the synthesis, reactions, biological activity, and physico-chemical properties of peptides. This book is organized into seven sections encompassing 46 chapters. The first three sections describe the methods of peptide synthesis, racemization, and degradation of peptide chains. These sections examine the developments in non-enzymatic selective modification and cleavage of peptides, as well as the oxidative modification of specific peptide chain. The succeeding section highlights the total synthesis of natural peptides and peptide a...
This book provides insights on a broad spectrum of renewable and sustainable energy technologies from the world’s leading experts. It highlights the latest achievements in policy, research and applications, keeping readers up-to-date on progress in this rapidly advancing field. Detailed studies of technological breakthroughs and optimizations are contextualized with in-depth examinations of experimental and industrial installations, connecting lab innovations to success in the field. The volume contains selected papers presented at technical and plenary sessions at the World Renewable Energy Congress, the world's premier conference on renewable energy and sustainable development. Held every two years, the Congress provides an international forum that attracts hundreds of delegates from more than 60 countries.
