This is the story of a man who wanted to find a cure for cancer when his grandfather died of cancer and so majored in biochemistry. Little did he see, upon demonstrating a precocious and creative approach to the problem, that other eyes were monitoring him for his potential. Little did Dan know that his proposal brought attention from other quarters of the government, quarters that were looking for men with talent like his with fresh new ideas and approaches. Before long three strangers paid Dan a visit one day while he was still an undergraduate at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and identified themselves as agents for the Department of Naval Intelligence. Dan had never heard of such ...

One of the most striking features of the twentieth century has been the rapid growth of the pharmaceutical industry and the large increases in the use and consumption of its products. This trend began in the first half of the century, but accelerated most sharply after the Second World War, when the creation of national systems of healthcare created mass markets for drugs. The industry then assumed a major economic, social and political significance, and became one of the most highly regulated sectors of the economy, attracting the attention of industry analysts as well as academics. This volume brings together a collection of papers exploring and reflecting upon some of the significant strands in the current studies of pharmaceuticals in the twentieth century. They touch upon many of the issues that are matters of concern and debate today, and their international and multidisciplinary approaches enrich our understanding of an object, of an industry, and of a process that are at the heart of our highly medicalized contemporary societies.

Pandora's Star

Pandora's Star is the first part of Peter F. Hamilton's epic Commonwealth Saga duology – a fantastic galaxy-spanning novel from the master of space opera. For fans of Iain M. Banks and Alastair Reynolds. At the edge of the galaxy something awakens – and it's coming for us . . . Earth AD 2329: Humanity has colonized over four hundred planets, all interlinked by wormholes. For the first time in mankind's history there is peace. Then a star over a thousand light years away suddenly vanishes, imprisoned inside a force field of immense size. Yet who – or what – has that sort of technology? And what could this mean for us? Only a faster-than-light starship, captained by ex-NASA astronaut Wilson Kime, can reach that distance to investigate. For Wilson, getting inside the force field could be easy. It may be harder to stop something else from getting out. What if there was a very good reason to seal off an entire star system? The Commonwealth Saga duology concludes with Judas Unchained. 'The best book Hamilton has written in years' - Guardian 'Anyone who begins this won’t be able to put it down' - Publishers Weekly

Minutes and Correspondence of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 1812-1924

Ever since its foundation in 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Phila. has preserved manuscript documents even after the information has been published. The secretaries, curators, librarians, editors & other officers of the Academy had all cached such papers somewhere for posterity. These holdings were largely brought together by Edward Nolan for his history to celebrate the 100th anniversary. He had hoped to have his long history published & presented as a memorial at that time. When funds were not available for printing, the ¿Short History¿ listed in the bibliography was used instead. The materials published here in microfilm form have always been locked away in the Academy¿s hall & always remained in the custody of the librarian.
