Louis Jacobs was Britain's most gifted Jewish scholar. A Talmudic genius, outstanding teacher and accomplished author, cultured and easy-going, he was widely expected to become Britain's next Chief Rabbi. Then controversy struck. The Chief Rabbi refused to appoint him as Principal of Jews' College, the country's premier rabbinic college. He further forbade him from returning as rabbi to his former synagogue. All because of a book Jacobs had written some years earlier, challenging from a rational perspective the traditional belief in the origins of the Torah. The British Jewish community was torn apart. It was a scandal unlike anything they had ever previously endured. The national media love...

Hollywood and After

  • Categories: Art

First published in English in 1974, Hollywood and After presents contemporary cinema in all its complexity, describing and analyzing the various factors which, in the sixties and seventies, brought so many changes both inside Hollywood and throughout the film industry of the USA. Formerly rivals, today cinema and television not only coexist, but are forced to cooperate closely in a world of technical developments such as videocassettes, cable TV, and satellite transmissions. The main part of this book is dedicated to artistic ...

Louis Jacobs and the Quest for a Contemporary Jewish Theology

For Louis Jacobs, the quest—the process of engaging with and thinking about Jewish faith—was a lifelong pursuit. He offered a model in the 1960s, a period characterized by general religious crisis, of an observant, committed, but intellectually curious Judaism that empowered individual seekers to address challenges to faith. In Orthodox Judaism at the time a battle was under way for religious control. Generating a widespread controversy in British Jewry known as the ‘Jacobs Affair’, his thought offers a lens for examining the trajectory of Orthodoxy. In a contemporary context marked by the changing cultural and intellectual concerns of a ‘post-secular’ age, the focus of some of t...

Louis Sauer is known in the US as one of the greatest housing experts. He achieved national fame when many of his innovative designs were built in Society Hill, the historic colonial neighborhood in Philadelphia. The quality, variety and reasoning behind his creative solutions for the renewal of large areas of old and derelict urban context were the exemplars for those who followed him in this field. The five designs included in this book are selected from the period (1961-79) when Sauer practiced in Philadelphia. His work is exceptional for its variety and wealth of solutions. Some examples are his modernistic forms, intelligent understanding of the history of the locale and the requirements of diverse urban scales. The five works Antonino Saggio is presenting in this publication give a picture of his outstanding design and the ingenuity of his solutions when faced with diverse design challenges and scales.
