This book gives an insight into the media constructions of historical remembrance reflecting transnational, national or nationalistic forms of politics. Authors from post-Yugoslavia and neighbouring countries focus on the diverse transnational (such as Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslav etc.) and national (such as Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian etc.) memory cultures in South-Eastern Europe, their interference and rivalry. They examine constructions of memory in different media from the 19th century to recent wars. These include longue durée images, breaks and gaps, selection and suppression, traumatic events and the loss of memory, nostalgia, false memory, reactivation, rituals and traces of memory.
The region of Ptuj lies on one of the central traffic axes within the broader margins of the Eastern Alps, and already in the distant past represented an important settlement centre. This monograph incorporates the knowledge hitherto gained abouth settlement history, from the Eneolithic to the Early Middle Ages in the eastern area of Ptuj, in Rabelčja vas. The emphasis is on the Roman Period, when the eastern district of the Roman town of Poetovio was beginning to spread here.Within the area of Rabelčja vas, which comprises nearly one-third of the Roman town of Poetovio, over a period of two centuries more than 160 discoveries and researches have taken place. During the past four decades, extensive rescue excavations have been carried out here, which have revealed numerous prehistorical remains, and also the eastern, crafts quarter of the ancient town, together with the main road and extensive burial sites.
Although empires have played a decisive role in political thinking and the orientation of political goals at all times, the focus of research has so far mostly been on spatial and ideological aspects. This volume, on the other hand, offers a multi-disciplinary collection of studies that deal with the instrumentalization and ongoing impacts of perspectives on empire and their place in time. Coming from archaeology, history, art history, literary studies, and social sciences, the individual case studies discuss perceptions of imperial histories and imagined futures of empires, both in imperial and in post-imperial contexts. The transcending historical significance of the imperial ideas and ideals shows the deep and long-lasting effects of empire in landscapes, mindscapes, and social structures. The diachronic cut through all epochs from antiquity to modern times is complemented by a broad global view to deepen the temporal understanding of imperial imaginaries as well as their political implications.
