Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Novel High-Gain Seeded Free-Electron Laser Schemes
This dissertation focuses on the study of novel high-gain free-electron laser (FEL) operation schemes with external seed lasers. The technique of manipulating the phase space of the electron beam, which is widely used in novel seeded FEL schemes, is systematically studied. Several novel FEL schemes are proposed for the generation of intense coherent FEL pulses with short wavelength, sub-femtosecond pulse length or multiple carrier frequency properties, which meet the needs of FEL users. Results of experiments are described for the recently proposed FEL schemes such as echo-enabled harmonic generation and cascaded high-gain harmonic generation. New photon/electron beam diagnostic methods are also developed for these experiments and future high-gain FEL facilities.
The Death Penalty in China
Featuring experts from Europe, Australia, Japan, China, and the United States, this collection of essays follows changes in the theory and policy of China's death penalty from the Mao era (1949–1979) through the Deng era (1980–1997) up to the present day. Using empirical data, such as capital offender and offense profiles, temporal and regional variations in capital punishment, and the impact of social media on public opinion and reform, contributors relay both the character of China's death penalty practices and the incremental changes that indicate reform. They then compare the Chinese experience to other countries throughout Asia and the world, showing how change can be implemented even within a non-democratic and rigid political system, but also the dangers of promoting policies that society may not be ready to embrace.

Physics and Engineering of High-performance Electron Storage Rings and Application of Superconducting Technology
The first Asian Accelerator School (AAS) was organised to show the rapid development of accelerator sciences based on electron storage rings in Asia. At present seven electronOCopositron colliders are operational in the world, and two of them are located in Asia: KEKB (the KEK B-Factory) at KEK in Japan, and BEPC at IHEP in China. It is also notable that one-third of the operating synchrotron light sources are Asian machines.To further improve the performance of electron storage rings, the use of superconducting magnets and cavities is of vital importance; therefore the curriculum of AAS was arranged not only to teach the basic physics of storage rings but also to give students a basic knowledge of superconducting technology."

Future Research Infrastructures: Challenges and Opportunities
Particle accelerators have attracted much interest and expectation from the international scientific community, and these show no sign of diminishing. Major world research laboratories have either planned or are envisaging the construction of new accelerators in order to foster the progress of science in many fields, from high energy physics to cultural heritage and the environment. This book presents 13 papers from the workshop "Future Research Infrastructures; Challenges and Opportunities", held as part of the series of the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics in Varenna, Italy, in July 2015. The workshop combined presentations on the science of particle accelerators and their applications with talks on the development of future accelerators, and the papers included here cover a diverse range of topics including: the European Spallation Source; the Swiss Light Source; accelerator projects in Korea; future circular colliders; synchrotron-based techniques for cultural heritage; and the new research horizon in hadron therapy.
