This report is the result of a series of brain-storming sessions organized by the AMSS (UK) and FAIR. The issues raised were drafted into an initial report written by Tarek El Diwany and revised by Christopher Allen. Copies were subsequently circulated to a number of educationists for review. We also acknowledge the contribution of all those involved in the initiation, discussion and review stages of the project as well as all those who offered valuable comments and amendments to the initial draft, and those who, either directly or indirectly, contributed to the final production of this report. These include among others: Maryam Badawi, Dr. Nassim Butt, Mohammed Evans, Yahya Birt, Dr. Zaki Badawi, Omer Megerisi, Dr. Anas Al-Shaikh-Ali, Naima Jouied, Zafar Ashraf, Muhammad Abdul Aziz, Ghanim Jawad, Michelle Messaoudi, Abdulkadir Naib and Ayisha Ali. Islam, Christianity and Pluralism

Islam’s brilliant contributions to science, art, and culture, are a timeless and precious heritage, which should be historically preserved for future generations. The great achievements of Muslim scholars are rarely if at all acknowledged in formal education, and today their identity, origins and impact remain largely obscure. This collection of papers aims to give readers a brief introduction to the intellectual history of Muslims and the contributions that eminent Muslim scholars have made in certain specific fields of knowledge including basic and applied physical and biological sciences, medicine, legal and political theories and practices, economic and financial concepts, models, and institutions, etc. The preservation of civilization necessitates a better understanding, sharing, and recognition of our common human heritage. Given today’s widespread negative stereotyping and falsely generated misunderstanding of Islam and Muslims, the publication of these papers on “Muslim Contributions to World Civilization” is vital to help repair the wrong that is being perpetrated and restore the historical truth, which is being distorted.

Islamophobia

Islamophobia has been on the rise since September 11, as seen in countless cases of discrimination, racism, hate speeches, physical attacks, and anti-Muslim campaigns. The 2006 Danish cartoon crisis and the controversy surrounding Pope Benedict XVI's Regensburg speech have underscored the urgency of such issues as image-making, multiculturalism, freedom of expression, respect for religious symbols, and interfaith relations. The 1997 Runnymede Report defines Islamophobia as "dread, hatred, and hostility towards Islam and Muslims perpetuated by a series of closed views that imply and attribute negative and derogatory stereotypes and beliefs to Muslims." Violating the basic principles of human ...

Muslims in the UK

Includes four policy papers focusing on Muslims in the UK. The papers address education, employment, justice, and equality. With their specific focus, the papers highlight how issues affect Muslims specifically, and make recommendations targeted to address those specificities, thus contributing to enriching the policy process. This publication is a follow up to the respective chapter in the EUMAP 2002 report "Monitoring Minority Protection in the EU." The 2002 report was a snap shot of the situation of Muslims, in terms of minority rights, and their experiences of discrimination and disadvantage.

Since 2011, with the British Government’s counter-radicalisation strategy, Prevent, non-violent Islamist groups have been considered a security risk for spreading a divisive ideology that can lead to radicalisation and violence. More recently, the Government has expressed concerns about their impact on social cohesion, entryism, and women’s rights. The key protagonists of non-violent Islamist ‘extremism’ allegedly include groups and individuals associated with the Muslim Brotherhood and Jama’at-i-Islami. They have been described as part of the ‘global Muslim Brotherhood’, but do they constitute a singular phenomenon, a social movement? This book shows that such groups and indiv...

Contemplation

The human race is in crisis and very few of us – if any – are able to understand what is wrong with our lives and the world at large. How did this happen and how did humans become so ‘disconnected’ with humanity? Why are psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, fear, and suicide on the increase, and why are conventional Western therapies unable to stem the tide? To approach this we must first look inside ourselves – to explore our own purpose in life and extend that principle to the rest of humanity. Despite the advances of modern Western psychology and the development of therapies that do help many, one area that is largely unexplored is that of the ‘human spirit’ ...
