This collection argues that being aware of and reflecting on language form and language use is a powerful tool, not only in language learning, but also in wider society. It adopts an interdisciplinary stance: one chapter argues the need for Language Awareness in business contexts, while another examines the role of critical cultural awareness and Language Awareness in education as ‘bildung’. Others report on research studies in language classrooms and in teacher education. Language Awareness is interrogated from a range of perspectives such as peer interaction, teaching young learners, learner strategies and strategies for writing, online reading, and oral fluency training. The scope is global, including contributions from Canada, Germany, Iran, Japan, Spain, and the UK, and covers bilingual as well as multilingual contexts. The book will be of interest to language teachers, language teacher educators, other language professionals, and generally to the language aware. Gaagudju is a previously undescribed and now nearly extinct language of northern Australia. This grammar provides an overall description of the language. Australian languages generally show a high degree of structural similarity to one another. Gaagudju conforms to some of the common Australian patterns, yet diverges significantly from others. This book examines the relationships between foreign language learning beliefs and learning preferences of two English language learners and the beliefs and teaching practices of two Native English-speaking teachers in the EFL context. In such an environment, the learners were not satisfied with learning English in their public school; they paid a great deal of money to attend a private school and had many expectations regarding the course and the teachers. On the other hand, the teachers had to satisfy their students without any personal experience in learning English as a foreign language. Practically, the book will help private schools and other similar contexts to enhance their competitiveness in the market and serve their learners better.
