New approaches for central nervous system rehabilitation

Neurorehabilitation is a complex and growing field of motor rehabilitation. It is specifically directed to apply restorative techniques to stimulate neural plasticity of the central nervous system (CNS). Considering that neuroplasticity is maintained for the whole human life and can be stimulated through specific learning or exposure to enriched environments, we can hypothesize that applying specific treatments can be beneficial for people with CNS injury. Because the plateau of neuroplasticity can be observed after about 12 weeks from stroke onset it is vital to capitalize on this high level of brain reorganization by providing well-timed and well-designed treatments. Here we can distinguish a wide range of approaches developed for CNS recovery in acute, subacute, or chronic stage of injury. These approaches comprise priming or augmentation techniques, including innovative technologies like end-effector robots, exoskeletons, or virtual reality. Many of them have been confirmed as effective, but so far in clinical practice, we can still experience a lack of specific indications i.e., which therapy for how long time and for which patient’s impairment can be applied.

This book contains the latest findings in a number of research areas, including the effects of dog-assisted therapy on the psychomotor development of children with intellectual disability; the use of weighted blankets and sleep quality in children with autism spectrum disorders; cognitive assessment and rehabilitation for pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis; the use of gait indexes in detecting gait changes in children with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy; as well as the effect of ankle joint mobilization, functional progressive resistance exercise, and action observation training on range of motion, gait, spasticity, gross motor function, and balance in children with spastic cerebral palsy. The book is intended for people who work with children and adolescents with neurodysfunctions on a daily basis. It will certainly be useful to physiotherapists, medical doctors, psychologists, and all members of interdisciplinary therapeutic teams. The book can also be recommended to all individuals interested in neurorehabilitation, including parents or guardians of children and adolescents with neurodysfunctions.

Dynamical Social Psychology

Dynamical Social Psychology

Traditional approaches to social psychology have proven highly successful in identifying causal mechanisms underlying human thought and behavior. With the recent advent of the dynamical approach, it is now possible to assemble sets of such mechanisms into coherent systems. This book uses innovative concepts and tools to illuminate the processes by which individuals, groups, and societies evolve and change in a systemic, self-sustaining manner, at times seemingly independent of external influences. Readers learn how the dynamical approach facilitates novel predictions and insights into such social psychological phenomena as attitudes, social judgment, goal-directed behavior, attraction, and relationships. Featuring a wealth of charts and figures derived from original research and computer simulations, the volume is grounded in classic and contemporary theories of social psychology.

Manipulacja pedagogiczno - społeczne aspekty część II.

Prezentowana Czytelnikom publikacja stanowi część drugą monografii poświęconej pedagogiczno-społecznym aspektom manipulacji. Monografia powstała z inicjatywy pedagogów z Wydziału Nauk Humanistycznych Krakowskiej Akademii im. Andrzeja Frycza Modrzewskiego.
