Burma's Constitution and Elections of 1974
In two parts: on the Constitution (Sections I-V) and on the Elections of 1974 and the Organizing of the New Government (Sections VI-X). Includes in the final section a commentary of the Constitution at the local level. Contains documents from the English language press, the text of the Constitution as published in English in 1974 and materials on major developments of 1974 such as chronologies on the making of the new Constitution and events relating to the election, a report on the Draft Constitution and information on the elections, the preparations for and results of a national referendum on the new Constitution. Material has been culled from a variety of sources, in particular the government-controlled newspapers, The Working People's Daily and The Guardian, which carry important texts, official government announcements and statements.

US-Singapore Relations, 1965-1975
At the height of the Cold War in Southeast Asia, the foreign relations between the United States and Singapore demonstrated the interplay between America’s strategy of containment and Singapore’s efforts at a non-aligned foreign policy. But there is a deeper story. American involvement in the Vietnam War not only held back the spread of communism in Southeast Asia, but also catalysed economic and strategic cooperation between the United States and Singapore. The author argues that Singapore might not have achieved its success so rapidly without the support of the US. As the war in Vietnam raged on, Singapore became a critical refueling point, also providing ship and aircraft repair for the US military. Commercial and strategic support from the United States lifted Singapore out of the economic doom predicted for the city-state after secession from Malaysia, cessation of Indonesian trade during Konfrontasi and Britain’s military withdrawal. By considering the importance of the US’s role in Singapore’s nation-building, this book provides an important supplement to the well-trodden narrative that attributes Singapore’s success to good governance.
Pluralist Constitutions in Southeast Asia
This book examines the presence of ethnic, religious, political, and ideational pluralities in Southeast Asian societies and how their respective constitutions respond to these pluralities. Countries covered in this book are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The chapters examine: first, the range of pluralist constitutional values and ideas embodied in the constitutions; secondly, the pluralist sources of constitutional norms; thirdly, the design of constitutional structures responding to various pluralities; and fourthly, the construction and interpretation of bills of rights in response to existing pluralities. The 'pluralist constitution' is thus one that recognises internal pluralities within society and makes arrangements to accommodate, rather than eliminate, these pluralities.
