Since the mid-1800's Te Kingitanga has been a force in New Zealand society. The Maori King movement combines spiritual and political elements which conserve the "turangawaewae" (standpoints) of the past with practical leadership in the contemporary Maori world. This collection of 14 biographies of leaders has been put together to celebrate the settlement of the Tainui claim and the royal apology given by Queen Elizabeth to the Tainui people in 1995.
When the Maori tribes obtained muskets in the early 1820s, the inter-tribal warfare which broke out resulted in major massacres and thousands of deaths. The Ngapuhi tribe of the far north, under the legendary Hongi Hika, swept away all before it, conquering tribes as far south as the Bay of Plenty. The 'musket wars' rewrote the Maori landscape, changing traditional regional power balances and depopulating whole areas of the country. As a result, when Europeans arrived, they met not healthy tribes, but often weakened local groups or even deserted landscapes. This study of Maori warfare asks, What is a musket war? The women of this book are mainly Pakeha. They are domestic servants, governors' wives and farmers, married, single, widowed or deserted. They write about love, friendship, children, destitution, illness and grief. Maori women write about land, loss and love, about families and domestic events - in both Maori and English.

This book challenges popular definitions of oral history that have displaced and confined indigenous oral accounts as merely oral tradition. It stands alongside other marginalized community voices that highlight the importance of feminist, Black, and gay oral history perspectives, and is the first text dedicated to a specific indigenous articulation of the field. Drawing on a Maori indigenous case study set in Aotearoa New Zealand, this book advocates a rethinking of the discipline, encouraging a broader conception of the way we do oral history, how we might define its form, and how its politics might move beyond a subsuming democratization to include nuanced decolonial possibilities.
