The IASS (International Association for Scandinavian Studies) is the international organization for the research of Nordic literature, culture and linguistics. Since 1956 the IASS conference has been organized every other year. In 2016, the 31th IASS conference took place in Groningen (Netherlands). This 2016 conference revolved around the 21st century as an era characterized by dynamics with different implications. These ongoing global transitions are reflected in the humanities; the dichotomy between centre and periphery has invaded the literary discourse. In many small language areas, more translated literature is being published than literature written in the national language. This implies that cultural mediators play a major role in the production of literature. Their efforts are made visible in a transnational approach to the history of literature.

The Vikings Reimagined explores the changing perception of Norse and Viking cultures across different cultural forms, and the complex legacy of the Vikings in the present day. Bringing together experts in literature, history and heritage engagement, this highly interdisciplinary collection aims to reconsider the impact of the discipline of Old Norse Viking Studies outside the academy and to broaden our understanding of the ways in which the material and textual remains of the Viking Age are given new meanings in the present. The diverse collection draws attention to the many roles that the Vikings play across contemporary culture: from the importance of Viking tourism, to the role of Norse sub-cultures in the formation of local and international identities. Literary and multimodal texts for children and young people play an important role in their acquisition of language and literacy, and they are a flourishing part of publishing and translating activities today. This book brings together twenty-one papers on the particular aspect of the translation of feigned orality. As the link between the literary and the multimodal text, fictional dialogue is the appropriate place for evoking orality, lending authenticity and credibility to the narrated plot and giving a voice to fictitious characters. This is illustrated with examples from narrative and dramatic texts as well as films, cartoons and television series, in their respective modes of mediation: translating, interpreting, dubbing and subtitling. The findings are of interest from the scholarly point of view of contrastive linguistics, for the professional practice of translating, interpreting, dubbing and subtitling and in the educational context.
