In order to reduce the number of deaths from severe head injuries, systematic management is essential. This book is a practical, comprehensive guide to the treatment of patients (both adults and children) with such injuries, from the time of initial contact through to the rehabilitation center. Sections are devoted to prehospital treatment, admission and diagnostics, acute management, and neurointensive care and rehabilitation. Evidence-based recommendations are presented for each diagnostic and therapeutic measure, and tips, tricks, and pitfalls are highlighted. Throughout, the emphasis is on the provision of sound clinical advice that will maximize the likelihood of an optimal outcome. Helpful flowcharts designed for use in daily routine are also provided. The authors are all members of the Scandinavian Neurotrauma Committee and have extensive practical experience in the areas they write about.
The important issue of rehabilitation is usually not reflected in the neurosurgical literature but left to publications on neurological rehabilitation or neuropsychological literature. However, it is the neurosurgeon who should care for the functional rehabilitation of patients who are disabled by movement disorders, spasticity, epilepsy, pain, and disorders of the vegetative state as they suffer from acute or chronic central nervous system, spinal cord and peripheral nerve lesions. The papers in this volume highlight the state of the art, basic research, and clinical as well social-medical application of neurorehabilitation around the world, depending on different socio-cultural and economic situations as they were reported and discussed at recent international conferences and workshops of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies Committee on Neurorehabilitation and the Euroacademia Multidisciplinaria Neurotraumatologica.
This volume provides comprehensive international coverage of neuropsychological rehabilitation. It contains scientific discussions of dynamic brain changes (genetics, structure, physiology and hormones) plasticity of the central nervous system, functional reorganization and brain repair in response to treatment in all stages, and emphasizes acute care of early and precise diagnostics. It is intended for clinicians, professionals and students in neuropsychology, health psychology, rehabilitation, behavioral neurology, occupational and physical therapy.
This volume contains 121 representative works on hydrocephalus which are collected from 24 listed journals and books in the field of neuroscience published in 1988.
