Each one of us could list the names of people we care for who have tragically walked away from faith. We could also share our own stories of spiritual weariness as we attempt to follow Jesus faithfully in this world. The need for faithful resilience has always been imperative for disciples of Jesus, but never more so than in a post-Christian culture such as our own. This is a book about developing this faithful resilience, what I'm calling "holy grit." Scripture is our best guide in the development of holy grit, particularly the book of Hebrews. The development of perseverance, or grit, is its primary concern. This book goes chapter by chapter through the book of Hebrews highlighting what we can learn about holy grit from its pages. The goal is that a weary Christian would read this book and be encouraged to develop the mindset and the habits that are conducive to perseverance.

The Human Faces of God

Does accepting the doctrine of biblical inspiration necessitate belief in biblical inerrancy? The Bible has always functioned authoritatively in the life of the church, but what exactly should that mean? Must it mean the Bible is without error in all historical details and ethical teachings? What should thoughtful Christians do with texts that propose God is pleased by human sacrifice or that God commanded Israel to commit acts of genocide? What about texts that contain historical errors or predictions that have gone unfulfilled long beyond their expiration dates? In The Human Faces of God, Thom Stark moves beyond notions of inerrancy in order to confront such problematic texts and open up a...

If the Bible’s teachings were a target, which teachings would be at its bullseye? And what elements of faith are non-essential matters of personal preference? Christians unable to tell the difference between essential, important, and personal elements of Christianity are risking significant errors. On the one hand, Christians who treat personal elements as essential to the faith fall into a sectarianism that misses the point of Christianity. On the other hand, Christians who treat essential elements as unimportant slide into a progressivism that will eventually rewrite the script of Christianity. Christian Convictions guides the reader into a discerning faith that majors in the majors. - from back of book
