This book gathers the joint proceedings of the VIII Latin American Conference on Biomedical Engineering (CLAIB 2019) and the XLII National Conference on Biomedical Engineering (CNIB 2019). It reports on the latest findings and technological outcomes in the biomedical engineering field. Topics include: biomedical signal and image processing; biosensors, bioinstrumentation and micro-nanotechnologies; biomaterials and tissue engineering. Advances in biomechanics, biorobotics, neurorehabilitation, medical physics and clinical engineering are also discussed. A special emphasis is given to practice-oriented research and to the implementation of new technologies in clinical settings. The book provides academics and professionals with extensive knowledge on and a timely snapshot of cutting-edge research and developments in the field of biomedical engineering.
This book reports on fundamental research, cutting-edge technologies and industrially-relevant applications in biomedical engineering. It covers methods for analysis, modeling and simulation of biological systems, reporting on the development and design of advanced biosensors, nanoparticles and wearable devices. It covers applications in disease monitoring and therapy, tissue engineering, sport and rehabilitation, and telehealth. It also reports on engineering methods for improving and monitoring medical service, and on advanced robotic applications. Gathering the proceedings of the XLV Congreso Nacional de Ingeniería Biomédica (CNIB2022), organised by the Mexican Society of Biomedical Engineering, this book offers a timely snapshot on technologies and methods in bioengineering, and on challenges related to their practical implementation in the health sector.

Comprehensive knowledge on the preparation, characterization, and applications of polymer nanocomposites Chemical Physics of Polymer Nanocomposites examines the state of the art in preparation, processing, characterizing, and applying a wide range of polymer nanocomposites, elucidating nanofiller/polymer interactions, nanofiller dispersion, distribution, filler-filler interactions, and interface properties, with a particular focus on the rheology of this important class of materials. The dependence of the rheological properties on the preparation techniques is discussed in detail, complemented by an overview of the processing approaches using conventional and micro injection molding, extrusi...
New research is being conducted in the diagnosis and new treatments of cancer that has high efficacy and are minimally invasiveness. Artificial intelligence, bioimpedance, thermal images and nanomaterials have been used to provide early diagnosis. New treatments based on the generation of microwaves, radiofrequency, or ultrasound have been proposed in the last couple of decades. Although thermotherapies have been shown to be efficient, for them to be considered as a primary treatment, they must overcome some hurdles. One of the main challenges is to ensure applicators that point the electromagnetic or the mechanical waves at a tumor, don't affect the surrounding healthy tissues. In some case...
The book presents to the reader an interdisciplinary vision of microspheres including its concepts and applications. The book ranges from the preparation of microspheres using different methodologies (such as sol-gel processes) through different characterisation techniques as well as the use of these systems for diagnostic diseases (cancer and hemodynamics fields). In addition, this book discusses aspects of the use of microspheres in: i) catalysis and separation sciences; ii) theoretical studies for applications in optical devices; iii) development of new systems aiming biomedical applications and iv) development of carrier systems for bioactive compounds. Thus this book covers a wide range...
Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications: Fundamental Concepts, Biological Interactions and Clinical Applications brings into one place information on the design and biomedical applications of different classes of nanoparticles. While aspects are dealt with in individual journal articles, there is not one source that covers this area comprehensively. This book fills this gap in the literature. - Outlines an in-depth review of biomedical applications of a variety of nanoparticle classes - Discusses the major techniques for designing nanoparticles for use in biomedicine - Explores safety and regulatory aspects for the use of nanoparticles in biomedicine
In an age of revolution, Mexico's creole leaders held aloft the Virgin of Guadalupe and brandished an Aztec eagle perched upon a European tricolor. Their new constitution proclaimed 'the Mexican nation is forever free and independent'. Yet the genealogy of this new nation is not easy to trace. Colonial Mexico was a patchwork state whose new-world vassals served the crown, extended the empire's frontiers and lived out their civic lives in parallel Spanish and Indian republics. Theirs was a world of complex intercultural alliances, interlocking corporate structures and shared spiritual and temporal ambitions. Sean F. McEnroe describes this history at the greatest and smallest geographical scales, reconsidering what it meant to be an Indian vassal, nobleman, soldier or citizen over three centuries in northeastern Mexico. He argues that the Mexican municipality, state and citizen were not so much the sudden creations of a revolutionary age as the progeny of a mature multiethnic empire.
The Perfect Slime presents the latest state of knowledge and all aspects of the Extracellular Polymeric Substances, (EPS) matrix – from the ecological and health to the antifouling perspectives. The book brings together all the current material in order to expand our understanding of the functions, properties and characteristics of the matrix as well as the possibilities to strengthen or weaken it. The EPS matrix represents the immediate environment in which biofilm organisms live. From their point of view, this matrix has paramount advantages. It allows them to stay together for extended periods and form synergistic microconsortia, it retains extracellular enzymes and turns the matrix int...
