Monet was the most typical and the most individual Impressionist painter. But while the painter was faithful and persevering in the pursuit of his motifs, his personal life followed a more restless course. Parisian by birth, he discovered painting as a youth in the provinces, where one of his homes, Argenteuil, has come to represent the artistic flowering and official establishment of Impressionism as a movement.

This family history explores the ancestry of the Wagenbach and Wiegand families. The book traces the origins of these families in Germany, among Amish Mennonites in Switzerland and France, and in Puritan England, culminating in the emigration of the two families to the United States. The book then continues to follow the evolution of the two families up to the present. In each of these phases, members of the Wagenbach and Wiegand families adhered to nonconformist religious traditions that set them apart from their contemporaries and exemplified the biblical notion that "narrow is the path which leadeth onto life and few there be that find it." My goal is to provide future generations of these families with an accurate and inspiring understanding of their past.

Featuring rarely seen paintings from the collection of Frederic C. Hamilton of Denver, supplemented by works from the Denver Art Museum, this book presents a broad-ranging history of Impressionist landscape--from the pioneering artists who painted in the forest of Fontainebleau and such paragons and teachers as Courbet, Corot, Daubigny, Boudin, and Manet through the central figures of Impressionism--Pissarro, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, and Morisot--and ultimately to Caillebotte, Cézanne, and van Gogh, whose works marked the start of a new era.

The Temple of Fame and Friendship

This book examines the renowned portrait collection assembled by C. P. E. Bach, J. S. Bach’s second son. One of the most celebrated German composers of the eighteenth century, C. P. E. Bach spent decades assembling an extensive portrait collection of some four hundred music-related items—from oil paintings to engraved prints. The collection was dispersed after Bach’s death in 1788, but with Annette Richards’s painstaking reconstruction, the portraits once again present a vivid panorama of music history and culture, reanimating the sensibility and humor of Bach’s time. Far more than a mere multitude of faces, Richards argues, the collection was a major part of the composer’s work ...

Jahrh...
