Indian Fights and Fighters (1904), by Cyrus Townsend Brady (illustrated)

Originally published in 1904, Indian Fights and Fighters regularly appears in bibliographies of significant works on the history of the American West. Embracing almost three decades of Plains history, it contains not only Brady's clear, fast-paced accounts of the Plains wars, but also a number of eyewitness accounts, most of which were written especially for him and which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The Powder River Expedition, the tragedy at Fort Phil Kearny, the Wagon Box Fight, the defense of Beecher's Island, the Fetterman Massacre, the battles of Washita and Summit Springs, and the campaigns of Crook, Custer, and Miles against the Sioux all are fully treated. The introduction by James T. King sketches Brady's career and evaluates his sources.

A Little Book for Christmas

Passes childhood, and I look down the nearer years. There rise before me remembrances of Christmas Days on storm-tossed seas, where waves beat upon the ice-bound ship. I recall again the bitter touch of water-warping winter, of drifts of snow, of wind-swept plains. In the gamut of my remembrance I am once more in the poor, mean, lonely little sanctuary out on the prairie, with a handful of Christians, mostly women, gathered together in the freezing, draughty building. In later years I worship in the great cathedral church, ablaze with lights, verdant and fragrant with the evergreen pines, echoing with joyful carols and celestial harmonies. My recollections are of contrasts like those of life...

Spanning the years from just after the Civil War, to the Battle of Wounded Knee in 1890, The Sioux Indian Wars is the chronicle of an important part of our American heritage. At the close of the Civil War the westward-moving tide of settlers had pressed back from Missouri and the Mississippi Rivers the Sioux and their allies the Cheyennes, the largest and most famous of the great Indian tribes. At the time, the territory was practically devoid of white settlements. It was a great sweep of land comprising every variety of climate and soil, from prairies to fertile valleys. The Big Horn Mountains were the most previous section, controlled by tribes fearful of any intrusion by settlers. The many rivers which traversed this territory teemed with fish, and the valleys that they watered were abundantly fertile for the growing of the few crops the Indians found necessary for support.

And Thus He Came

A Christmas fantasy in which Jesus becomes again a determining influence in the crises of human lives. In the form of a child he appears to those who need aid or solace, in scenes ranging from the ballroom to the slums. It might be said of the little stories gathered together between the covers of "And Thus He Came: A Christmas Fantasy," by Cyrus Townsend Brady, that they fall across the brain of the reader like spiritual mirages in the midst of a world of overgrown materialism. Each is poignant with a message: To the hectic dancer in the brilliant ballroom, planning to elope with a lover, comes the vision of the Christ-Child, and thrusting temptation from her she is inspired book contains a number of dainty tipped-in pictures by Walter N. Everett.
