Burning dinners, stitching "scandalous" quilts, talking "hard" in the male dominated world of rap music---Feminist Messages interprets such acts as instances of coding, or covert expressions of subversive or disturbing ideas. While coding may be either deliberated or unconscious, it is a common phenomenon in women's stories, art, and daily routines. Because it is essentially ambiguous, coding protects women from potentially dangerous responses from those who might be troubled by their messages.

The topic of hydrogen in an on metals and alloys is important in a number ofdisciplines including solid-state physics, materials science, physical chemistry, and energy technology. This volume treats the dynamics of hydrogen in intermetallic compounds, surface properties, kinetics, and applications of metal hydrides in energy technology. In addition, selected experimental methods are described. The introductory chapter will enable non-specialists to gain an overall picture of the field and to appreciate the relevant scientific issue. The companion volume, Hydrogene in Intermetallic Compounds I, was published as Vol. 63 of Topics in Applied Physics.
WINNER OF THE 2007 CHLA BOOK AWARD! Children's literature has transcended linguistic and cultural borders since books and magazines for young readers were first produced, with popular books translated throughout the world. Emer O'Sullivan traces the history of comparative children's literature studies, from the enthusiastic internationalism of the post-war period – which set out from the idea of a supra-national world republic of childhood – to modern comparative criticism. Drawing on the scholarship and children's literature of many cultures and languages, she outlines the constituent areas that structure the field, including contact and transfer studies, intertextuality studies, interm...
This volume collects refereed contributions based on the presentations made at the Sixth Workshop on Advanced Mathematical and Computational Tools in Metrology, held at the Istituto di Metrologia “G. Colonnetti” (IMGC), Torino, Italy, in September 2003. It provides a forum for metrologists, mathematicians and software engineers that will encourage a more effective synthesis of skills, capabilities and resources, and promotes collaboration in the context of EU programmes, EUROMET and EA projects, and MRA requirements. It contains articles by an important, worldwide group of metrologists and mathematicians involved in measurement science and, together with the five previous volumes in this series, constitutes an authoritative source for the mathematical, statistical and software tools necessary to modern metrology. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings)Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Science
How have fairy tales from around the world changed over the centuries? What do they tell us about different cultures and societies? Drawing on the contributions of scholars working on Italian, French, English, Ottoman Turkish, and Japanese tale traditions, this book underscores the striking mobility and malleability of fairy tales written in the years 1450 to 1650. The essays examine how early modern scientific theories, debates on the efficacy of witchcraft, conceptions of race and gender, religious beliefs, the aesthetics of landscape, and censorial practices all shaped the representations of magic and marvels in the tales of this period. Tracing the fairy tale's swift movement across ling...
Childhood is not only a biological age, it is also a social construct. The essays in this collection range chronologically from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, and geographically across England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. They chart the depictions of children in various media including painting, sculpture and the graphic arts.
An innovative, critical, historically informed, yet accessible reassessment of writers who remained in Nazi Germany and Austria yet expressed nonconformity - even dissent - through their fiction.
Advances in metrology depend on improvements in scientific and technical knowledge and in instrumentation quality, as well as better use of advanced mathematical tools and development of new ones. In this volume, scientists from both the mathematical and the metrological fields exchange their experiences. Industrial sectors, such as instrumentation and software, are likely to benefit from this exchange, since metrology has a high impact on the overall quality of industrial products, and applied mathematics is becoming more and more important in industrial processes. This book is of interest to people in universities, research centers and industries who are involved in measurements and need advanced mathematical tools to solve their problems, and to those developing such mathematical tools.
