Earthquakes, even though they occur rarely, induce inertia forc% which is dynamic and complex. Moreover, they are sometimes so devastating that it is worth going into the depth of understanding them. The current work is one step towards understanding the complex effects of this dynamic force particularly on low rise RC structures which are found in almost all parts of the world. During 2001 Bhuj earthquake of India, a major damage was observed in RC framed structures at Ahemdabad which were in the range of G+3 to G+7 storey. Most of the buildings were having a normal grid of 3m x 3m column spacing with a storey height of 3m. Hence the present work, which is expected to act as a guide line for Civil and Structural Engineers in smaller towns and cities where expert advice may not be easily available, is devoted to RC framed structures ranging from G+3 to G+ 7 storeys

Reinforced and pre-stressed concrete are widely used for the construction of infrastructures such as bridges, industrial structures, buildings, etc. Most of the time, the quality of the concrete mix is assumed to be guaranteed but due to the congestion of reinforcement and the quality control exercised during placing and vibrating, honeycombs and voids are likely to be present in the hardened concrete. The presence of voids leads to the early deterioration of concrete and corrosion also sets in. The corrosion of reinforcement causes damage to the cover concrete and also section loss in the area of steel. In the case of pre-stressed concrete members, the corrosion leads to a catastrophic failure without any warning. Hence, it becomes necessary to evaluate the condition of concrete using Non Destructive Techniques (NDT) and Partially Destructive Techniques (PDT). The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) method which is widely adopted till now gives the relative quality and integrity of concrete and is based on the transit time. The rebound hammer gives the quality of concrete in the cover zone based on the rebound number.

In this report a model for the determination of the serviceability and ultimate moment capacities of bolted moment end plate connections utilising rectangular hollow sections joined with eight bolts is presented. The connection configuration is such that two bolts are located above each of the flanges and beside each of the webs. The model considers the combined effects of prying action due to flexible end plates, the formation of yield lines in the end plates, and failures due to punching shear and beam section failure. The model is calibrated and validated using experimental data from a test program. The design model constitutes a relatively simple method for predicting the serviceability and ultimate moment capacities for the particular type of bolted moment end plate connection described herein.
