In The Reception of Bodin an international and interdisciplinary team of seventeen scholars considers one of the most remarkable figures in European intellectual history, the sixteenth-century jurist and philosopher Jean Bodin, as a ‘prismatic agent’ in the transmission of ideas. The subject is approached in the light of reception theory coupled with critical evaluation of key texts as well as features of Bodin’s own career. Bodin is treated as recipient of knowledge gleaned from multifarious sources, and his readers as receivers responding diversely to his work in various contexts and from various standpoints. The Crisis of 1614 and The Addled Parliament
This title was first published in 2003. The aim of The Crisis of 1614 and The Addled Parliament is to bring literary historians together with constitutional and state historians to reflect on the political and ideological upheavals of Britain in 1614 from various perspectives. In the aftermath of new historicism and 'revisionist' Stuart historiography the time seems right for the detailed study of highly specific historical moments and localities, and 1614 seemed particularly in need of renewed attention because few traditional historians have seriously addressed the constitutional crisis of the ill-fated parliament of that year. Literary historians, too, seemed to have failed to bring this significant political moment into focus, despite the fact that there were many literary interventions in contemporary debates of the period. The volume investigates a number of key issues of this decisive political watershed - and examines not only the disastrous parliament, but also wider problems connected to commerce and economics and the freedom of political debate.

Thomas Dekker and the Culture of Pamphleteering in Early Modern London
The book looks at the career of the London playwright and prose pamphleteer Thomas Dekker between the years 1613 and 1628. The period and subject matter link the book with mainstream historical and literary topics, most particularly to the longer-term history of the Civil Wars and to popular literature and drama in the age of Shakespeare and Jonson. Pamphlets have been used as sources for topics ranging from witchcraft to popular politics, and this book seeks to inform more careful readings of such sources. Drawing on interdisciplinary historical methods and literary scholarship, it uses literary texts as a way into the culture of print and debate in early seventeenth century England. In so doing it contributes to the post-revisionist historiography of political consciousness and print cultures under the early Stuarts, as well as illuminating the career of a relatively neglected and misunderstood writer.
