Pitcairn Island as a Port of Call
Pitcairn Island is arguably the most isolated inhabited spot on Earth. Yet despite tricky ocean currents, often lethal surf and sudden gales, the island's standing as the home of the descendants of Fletcher Christian and his mutineer cohorts from H.M.S. Bounty has drawn thousands of ships to its shores. This maritime history of the island chronicles every ship that has called at Pitcairn from the time of the arrival of the mutineers in 1790 to December 2010. The ship's log format lists the date of each call, the ship's name and particulars, and brief reports of activities during the call, which often include matters of love, murder, survival, intrigue, shipwreck, romance, and much more. Cullman County, Alabama Cemeteries, Volume 4
Cullman County was established in 1877 in large part from the west side of Blount and the east side of Winston counties. Today, the few old cemeteries which existed in those counties in the early days are found within the borders of Cullman. The cemetery listings in this four volume set were conducted by the author beginning in 2003 and ending in early 2006. An attempt was made to personally visit every cemetery in Cullman County and record information from each readable monument. Volume 4 of this series covers alphabetically cemeteries M through Z, beginning with the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery and concluding with the Zion Grove Cemetery. The volumes are filled with photos of many of the old cemetery sites and notes describing the company and unit of most of the old Civil War era veterans. This set of books is vital to any serious student of Cullman County genealogy and history.
Palestinian Cinema
Although in recent years, the entire world has been increasingly concerned with the Middle East and Israeli-Palestinian relationship, there are few truly reliable sources of information regarding Palestinian society and culture, either concerning its relationship with Israeli society, its position between east and west or its stances in times of war and peace. One of the best sources for understanding Palestinian culture is its cinema which has devoted itself to serving the national struggle. In this book, two scholars--an Israeli and a Palestinian--in a rare and welcome collaboration, follow the development of Palestinian cinema, commenting on its response to political and social transformations. They discover that the more the social, political and economic conditions worsen and chaos and pain prevail, the more Palestinian cinema becomes involved with the national struggle. As expected, Palestinian cinema has unfolded its national narrative against the Israeli narrative, which tried to silence it.
