The theme selected for the 2019 EuroCALL conference held in Louvain-la-Neuve was ‘CALL and complexity’. CALL and professionalisation: short papers from EUROCALL 2021
The 2021 EUROCALL conference engaged just under 250 speakers from 40 different countries. Cnam Paris and Sorbonne Université joined forces to host and organise the event despite the challenging context due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally programmed to be held on site in the heart of Paris, France, the EUROCALL organising team and executive committee agreed to opt for a blended and then for a fully online conference. The theme of the 2021 EUROCALL conference was “CALL & Professionalisation”. This volume, a selection of 54 short papers by some of the EUROCALL 2021 presenters, offers a combination of research studies as well as practical examples fairly representative of the theme of the conference.

Task-based grammar teaching of English
The focus on communication in TBLT often comes at the expense of form. In this book, the task-based approach is enhanced and coupled with insights into (cognitive) grammar, an approach which sees grammar as meaningful. The book shows how grammar teaching can be integrated into a communicative lesson in a non-explicit way, i.e., "by the backdoor". The learners are involved in situations that they may also encounter outside their classrooms and they are given communicative tasks they are to work on and solve, usually with a partner or in small groups. What teachers need to invest for preparing such lessons is their own creativity, as they have to come up with communicative situations which guide the learners into using a specific grammatical structure. The book first discusses the didactic and the linguistic theories involved and then translates these theoretical perspectives into actual teaching practice, focusing on the following grammatical phenomena: tense, aspect, modality, conditionals, passive voice, prepositions, phrasal verbs, verb complementation, pronouns and articles.
Sehverstehen im Fremdsprachenunterricht
Der vorliegende Band widmet sich der Erforschung der bisher wenig beachteten und äußerst komplexen (Teil-) Kompetenz des Sehverstehens im Fremdsprachenun-terricht. Diese gewinnt im Kontext der Erweiterung des Hörverstehens zum Hörsehverstehen z.B. in den Bil-dungsstandards für das Abitur an Bedeutung. Was ist Sehverstehen? Welche Sehstrategien können gezielt geschult werden, um das Hörverstehen in All-tagssituationen und in Aufgaben zum Hörsehverstehen zu stützen? Welche Situationen gibt es, in denen Sehverstehen in-terkulturelle und kommunikative Bedeutung hat? Wie können Testkonstrukte zum Sehverstehen empirisch va-lidiert werden? Diesen und weiteren Fragen wird im vorliegenden Band nachgegangen, wobei insbesondere die romanischen Sprachen, aber auch das Englische und das Deutsche als Fremdsprache in Einzelfalldarstellungen Berücksichtigung finden.
