A Grammar of Dumi
Dumi Rai is a Kiranti language spoken in Khotan district in the Everest zone of eastern Nepal. The Dumi speaking area is limited to five pancayats all abutting the Rava and Tap rivers near their confluence and upriver therefrom. The Dumi are now a minority in the area to which they are indigenous (constituting roughly a quarter of the population in Khotan district); retention is low and surviving speakers of Dumi are scarce. In Hot Pursuit of Language in Prehistory
Compiled in honor and celebration of veteran anthropologist Harold C. Fleming, this book contains 23 articles by anthropologists (in the general sense) from the four main disciplines of prehistory: archaeology, biogenetics, paleoanthropology, and genetic (historical) linguistics. Because of Professor Fleming's major focus on language he founded the Association for the Study of Language in Prehistory and the journal Mother Tongue the content of the book is heavily tilted toward the study of human language, its origins, historical development, and taxonomy. Because of Fleming's extensive field experience in Africa some of the articles deal with African topics. This volume is intended to exemplify the principle, in the words of Fleming himself, that each of the four disciplines is enriched when it combines with any one of the other four. The authors are representative of the cutting edge of their respective fields, and this book is unusual in including contributions from a wide range of anthropological fields rather than concentrating in any one of them.
Endangered Languages of the Caucasus and Beyond
According to UNESCO, it is believed that at least half of the nearly 7,000 languages spoken around the world will cease to be used within the next 100 years. If this issue is neglected, people will lose not only their cultural heritage but also invaluable understandings about the history of all humankind. Endangered Languages of the Caucasus and Beyond includes the manuscripts of 19 papers that were presented at the 1st International CUA Conference on Endangered Languages, organized by the Caucasus University Association (CUA), at Ardahan, Turkey, on 13 to 16 October 2014. The articles address issues such as the state of the field of documentation, conservation and revitalization of endangered languages with special reference to the endangered languages in the Caucasus region and beyond.
