Emerging Contaminants presents the reader with information on classification, recent studies, and adverse effects on the environment and human health of the main classes of contaminants. Emerging contaminants are synthetic or natural compounds and microorganisms produced and used by humans that cause adverse ecological and human health effects when they reach the environment. This book is organized into four sections that cover the classification of contaminants and the instrumental techniques used to quantify them, recent studies on pesticides, antibiotics as an important group of emerging contaminants, and studies of different classes of emerging contaminants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), microplastics, and others.
Health care demands more and more cooperation and the convergence of all health related sciences, from Life Molecules to Global Health, as was most recently shown by the challenge of the COVID pandemic. This book brings together science contributions from NOVA’s researchers on biology and health, in the format of a broad life construct book.
The Optimum-Path Forest (OPF) classifier was first published in 2008 in its supervised and unsupervised versions with applications in medicine and image classification. Since then, it has expanded to a variety of other applications such as remote sensing, electrical and petroleum engineering, and biology. In recent years, multi-label and semi-supervised versions were also developed to handle video classification problems. The book presents the principles, algorithms and applications of Optimum-Path Forest, giving the theory and state-of-the-art as well as insights into future directions. - Presents the first book on Optimum-path Forest - Shows how it can be used with Deep Learning - Gives a wide range of applications - Includes the methods, underlying theory and applications of Optimum-Path Forest (OPF)
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 20th EPIA Conference on Artificial Intelligence, EPIA 2021, held virtually in September 2021. The 62 full papers and 6 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 108 submissions. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: artificial intelligence and IoT in agriculture; artificial intelligence and law; artificial intelligence in medicine; artificial intelligence in power and energy systems; artificial intelligence in transportation systems; artificial life and evolutionary algorithms; ambient intelligence and affective environments; general AI; intelligent robotics; knowledge discovery and business intelligence; multi-agent systems: theory and applications; and text mining and applications.
Focus: Music of Northeast Brazil examines the historical and contemporary manifestations of the music of Brazil, a country with a musical landscape that is layered with complexity and diversity. Based on the author’s field research during the past twenty years, the book describes and analyzes the social/historical contexts and contemporary musical practices of Afro-Brazilian religion, selected Carnival traditions, Bahia’s black cultural renaissance, the traditions of rural migrants, and currents in new popular music. Part One, Understanding Music in Brazil, presents important issues and topics that encompass all of Brazil, and provides a general survey of Brazil’s diverse musical landscape. Part Two, Creating Music in Brazil, presents historical trajectories and contemporary examples of Afro-Brazilian traditions, Carnival music, and northeastern popular music. Part Three, Focusing In, presents two case studies that explore the ground-level activities of contemporary musicians in Northeast Brazil and the ways in which they move between local, national, and international realms. The accompanying downloadable resources offer vivid musical examples that are discussed in the text
Fabio Luis Barbosa dos Santos delves into the history of South America to understand the rise and fall of the so-called 'progressive governments'. In the wake of mobilizations against neoliberalism in the 1990s, most countries elected presidents identified with change. However, less than twenty years after Hugo Chávez's victory, this trend seems to be reversed. The times of Lula are now Bolsonaro's. What happened? Supported by an extensive bibliography and hundreds of interviews, the author addresses each South American country, including those who did not elect progressives, in addition to Cuba. The national focus is enriched by an analysis of regional integration attempts, providing a det...
